Introduction
This website was created as an internet based historical resource to further the knowledge of a heroic struggle that was an integral part of the march of the United States towards defeat of Imperial Japan. "Tarawa on the Web" contains pictures, maps, documents, and other resources that will aid a researcher or a history buff in their search for information. Hopefully the reader will increase his knowledge and interest in the Battle for Tarawa through the viewing of these pages. A narrative of the short but costly battle is beyound the scope of this website and even the evergrowing internet. In the bibliography section references can be found for a large number of books and articles that recount in detail the many facets of Operation Galvanic. No website, no matter how sophisticated will ever take the place of a book. "Tarawa on the Web" will hopefully be a beginning and not simply an end for those interested in a great battle of the Second World War. Each week something is updated or added, therefore visit often. Feel free to send any information that would be pertinent to the subject. I would be especially interested in veteran's accounts, unpublished photos of the various units involved in the invasion, and Betio today.
Good reading and get a library card!
