Brian Spencer asks if it is now on equal terms, or whether it remains traditional art's poor relation. Galleries report healthy sales for original prints and auction prices for photographic works are reaching new records on a regular basis. Meanwhile some of the most respected exhibition spaces in the country, such as the Barbican and the National Portrait Gallery, are confident enough about photography's pulling power to mount high profile shows, which are attracting huge audiences. The market for photographic prints continues to grow and, as prices maintain an upward trend the emergence of the Internet promises to give print collecting a new dimension and an international edge. It all suggests that the old chestnut that questions whether photography really can take its place as an art form alongside the likes of, say, sculpture or painting is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
