. Interviews with the six shortlisted candidates took place late last year and it can now be announced that the post has been awarded to Susan Derges. Susan Derges studied at the Chelsea School of Art and Design and the Slade School of Fine Art. Much of her work is photographically based, often making exposures directly onto photographic paper without the use of a camera. River flows, melting ice and the growth and motion of tadpoles have all been recorded in this way.

The contribution that this work is intended to make is cultural and educational. I would hope that the results of my research contributed something to the continuing development of the photographic medium, and that the content of the work relates to the new metaphors sought by holistic science. He studied painting at the Central School of Art, then a postgraduate diploma in Environmental Design at Hornsey College of Art in London. In 1986 he took an MA in 'The Social and Political Influences in Art' at the University of Trent, Nottingham. He has lived in Italy, England and recently the United States.
