He married (1) WELTHEA MARIA BREWSTER March 10, 1871 in Gardner, Grundy County, IL, daughter of Edwin Brester and Ruth Gleason. He married (2) SARAH JANE CRIBBS April 17, 1876 in Verona, Fayett County, PA, daughter of John Cribs and Elizabeth Mays.

Lafayette, as he was called, was a veteran of the Civil War. He ran away from home at the age of 13 to enlist at Oskaloosa, IA. He gave his age as 19 and his home state as Ohio.
