'My Home Palmyra'

(written 01-Sep-2003) (To the tune of 'Waltzing Matilda')

Once a tiny suburb with a single bakehouse
Under the shade of the eucalyptus trees
Then it grew and it grew after 1942
What a lovely suburb it's turned out to be

This is Palmyra, my home Palmyra
The most convenient suburb in Perth by far
Where you can buy a computer or a children's scooter
A cemetary plot or a luxury car
In came new residents to settle in this suburb
Up went the centres for the elderly
And there are now two schools; both are primary
What a lovely suburb it's turned out to be
This is Palmyra, my home Palmyra
Perth's greenest suburb with birdlife galore
Parrots that talk and magpies that squawk
And golden eagles and seagulls that soar
Up went more houses, and bakeries to sell you bread
In came major highways, one, two, three
With numerous bus stops next to my favourite shops
What a lovely suburb it's turned out to be
This is Palmyra, my home Palmyra
Perth's greenest suburb with palm trees galore
With children's parks with their own brick-paved walks
And so many salespeople going door to door.

This is Palmyra

(written 19-Sep-2003) (To the tune of 'Delilah')

I see the light of the bakehouse as I look out my window
I see the faraway lights on Canning Highway
This is my suburb
As the sun rises I watch the park where children play

My, my, my, Palmyra
This is my Palmyra
I like to be where every house has a palm tree
And there's a park where I can pick lemons for free
At break of day when the kids like to play, I go shopping
I have a choice of three supermarket stores
This is my suburb
You'd like it too if this suburb I live in was yours
My, my, my, Palmyra
This is my Palmyra
So, before, I tell you any more
I just love Palmyra, I just wouldn't move anymore
(Instrumental break)
This is my suburb
You'd like it too if this suburb I live in was yours
My, my, my, Palmyra
This is my Palmyra
So, before, I tell you any more
I just love Palmyra, I just wouldn't move anymore
I just love Palmyra, I just wouldn't move anymore

All of the winning songs had tunes based on songs that are regularly played on this radio station, but my songs weren't, so
I guess that's why I didn't win a prize in this competition. There were hundreds of entries in the Suburban Songs competition,
but only ten could be picked by the station's music director to be winners. Here is a list of the prizes I have previously won
from this radio station:

  • April 1998 - A Babyface CD (Nightmix Online Draw prize)
  • May 1998 - Dinner for four at Perth's Beau Rivage restaurant, Gloucester Park Racing Track ('Trictionary' prize)
  • August 1998 - Dinner for six at Perth's Cafe Tensingh Indian Restaurant (Botica's Bunch phone-in topic prize)
