President Mwanawasa honours KK. After his celebrated fight against corruption, probably one of the biggest successes President Levy Mwanawasa scored during his first year in office as Zambia’s third Republican President was his honouring of national heroes from a cross section of Zambias society. The twenty-nine people were honoured at an investiture ceremony, at State House on the day Zambia celebrated its 38 Independence anniversary, on October 24, last year. These included veteran freedom fighters like Grey Zulu, Kapasa Makasa, nine traditional rulers from all provinces in the country, celebrated sports personalities like Kalusha Bwalya and Lottie Mwale, and academicians like Professor Lupando Mukonge, Professoer Lameck Goma, and Dr Tackson Lambart. Observers and recipients of the awards described this as a bold act of unity and nation building on the part of President Mwanawasa. This was so because in the last ten years no single Zambian had been recognised or honoured for their contribution to the development of the nation. Prominent among those that were honoured are Zambia’s First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda, former Zambia’s President Simon Kapwepwe and veteran politician Humphrey Mulemba. Mr Kapwepwe and Mr Mulemba who received the honours posthumously were awarded the Order of the Eagle of Zambia: second division.Dr Kaunda who was not present to receive the honour was given the highest honour as the Grand Commander of the Eagle of Zambia (GCEZ) first division, an honour which has previously only been bestowed on two people namely former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, and South African President Thabo Mbeki.
