More Than 300 Jewish Veterans Receive Presidential Medals A ceremony took place in Odessa to present numerous former ghetto prisoners and prisoners of Nazi concentration camps with the Presidential Memorial Medals bearing the inscription "To a Defender of the Fatherland". Local veterans of one of the city's neighborhoods gathered in the hall of the Jewish Cultural Society for this event, while their peers from three other neighborhoods received this honorable award the day before. Beheaded journalist given Ukraine's highest honour Journalist Georgiy Gongadze, whose murder in 2000 jolted the administration of Ukraine's former President Leonid Kuchma, was posthumously awarded the country's highest honour. "I have signed a decree presenting the Hero of Ukraine award (posthumous) to Georgiy Gongadze," said President Viktor Yushchenko, who won last December's election on a wave of protests against Kuchma.
