Kategaya, Nagenda, Wapa Heroes (President Yoweri Museveni decorated some original National Resistance Movement heavyweights and combatants with medals of valour, immortalising them as heroes for contributing to the 1981-86 liberation war. The new heroes were classified in three categories including the Damu Medal (Kiswahili for blood) whose recipients of this medal were wounded in action during the war). Museveni decorated Uganda's military attaché to Egypt, Rtd Col Julius Kihandae in absentia. Museveni awarded the Luwero Triangle Medal (for officers and men of the NRA and political/military leaders) to the First Deputy Premier/Internal Affairs Minister, Eriya Kategaya, former Health Minister, Dr James Makumbi, former AIDS Control Programme boss, Dr Warren Namara, Prof Stanley Tumwine, John Chrisestom Gwasaze and Omulangira Lt Juuko. The Nalubaale Medal (for civilian activists who assisted the NRA/NRM during the guerrilla war) was awarded to the Third Deputy Premier/Foreign Affairs Minister, James Wapakhabulo, the National Political Commissar, Dr Crispus Kiyonga, Justice Minister, Janat Mukwaya, Uganda's envoy to Washington DC, Edith Ssempala, Museveni's senior media advisor, John Nagenda and former Privatisation Minister Matthew Rukikaire. Others awarded the Nalubaale Medal were: Fountain Publishers proprietor, James Tumusiime, former Health Minister, Zac Kaheru (post humous), former URA boss, Elly Rwakakooko, Dr Jack Luyombya, former Mbarara District LC 5 chairperson, Justine Sabiiti, Sam Male, Michael Wasswa Ssekamatte from Gombe, Samuel Kazinga from Luwero, Edith Nalumansi from Masulita, Ben Buyondo from Mubende, Kassim Muwanga from Masulita, Kabandwa Kiggundu from Masulita, Ssenfuka Salongo from Kazo-Angola, Godfrey Kazibwe from Gombe and Mary Nagawa from Mukono. allafrica.com 11Jun 02
France Honours Ugandan Scholar The French government has given its highest academic award to Prof. Fredrick Kayanja, the vice chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
