Honoring our Heroes Nobody received the Trinity Cross this year so, whether by accident or design, nobody will be put in the position of having to refuse what remains Trinidad and Tobago's highest national award on the grounds that the award's nomenclature is of Christian origin and therefore unacceptable to people of other religious persuasions. A mixed group of Trinidadians have been awarded the nation's second-highest award, the Chaconia Medal (Gold), including two sportsmen in golfer Stephen Ames and swimmer George Bovell III, and businessman Arthur Lok Jack, who, in fact, is the only businessman on the list. We would like to commend all our citizens who have received national awards, both the already established and the relatively newly known such as Ms Veera Bhajan, the girl who showed that physical handicap need not be a bar to achievement, and Ms Rhonda Charles, whose life-saving bravery earned her a reward for gallantry. The awards given to Customs officer Carl De Souza and police officer Edward Williams, both of whom were murdered and whose posthumous recognition shows the other side of the Trinbagonian reality. trinidadexpress.com 31 Aug 04

Hero's widow prays for justice Over four months ago Acting Inspector Edward Williams was fatally shot and yesterday his widow said she was still praying that his murderers would be brought to justice. Holding back tears at President's House in St Ann's, Pamela Williams received the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) awarded posthumously to her husband. It was for bravery, gallantry and loyalty. Also receiving awards were professional golfer Stephen Ames and personal development specialist Jacqueline Koon How. Ames received the Chaconia Medal (Gold), while Koon How got the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) in the sphere of culture. trinidadexpress.com 17 Nov 04
