Orders and Decorations of Tonga (Christopher Buyers)
Tonga (Kingdom of) - I received an email from Mr. Randy E. Duff, who has long been interested in the modern history of the Kingdom of Tonga. He is aware that Tonga's first monarch, King George Tupou I, created an order-of-knighthood. He has been led to understand that this decoration, known as "The Royal Order of Tonga" was instituted in the 1870s or 1880s. Furthermore, he has heard that a later monarch, Queen Salote Tupou III, was said to have created a separate decoration in the 1940's or 1950's. It is thought to have been called "The Order of the Tongan Star". The current Tongan monarch, King Tafa'ahau Tupou IV is said to have established a set of medal, to be awarded for merit. These are thought to have been created in the late 1960's or early 1970, and called the "Uluafi Medals". According to Mr. Duff, Spink and Sons are not aware of any of the manufacturers of these medals. It is believed that the medals were manufactured by Cretly of Paris, or possibly A. Marie Stuart of Paris, or even by a German medallist firm. Mr. Duff would like to hear from anyone who can add to the above information or provide any additional information on Tongan medals. You can email him. Aug 04
