Putin Establishes Medal Dedicated to Kazan's 1000th Anniversary Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree establishing a new medal dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, a Russian constituent republic in the Volga Area. The brass medal is 32mm in diameter and carries an image of the Kazan Kremlin on one side. Inscribed on the rim are the words: "In memory of the 1000th anniversary of Kazan."
