United Nations United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) Medal UNTAG was established to ensure the early independence of Namibia through free and fair elections under the supervision and control of the United Nations. The Mission was established April 1989 with a mandate for one year and finally closed in March 1990. |

Nujoma Honours Struggle Heroes President Sam Nujoma conferred medals and honorary awards on 52 men and women for their heroism during the liberation war. Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Mosé Penaani Tjitendero received the second highest honour of "The Most Brilliant Order of the Namibian Sun", in the first class category, followed by both Marco Hausiku and Bishop Dr Kleopas Dumeni, who were bestowed with "The Excellent Order of the Namibian Eagle". The recipient of the first class medal of "The Most Distinguished Order of Namibia" is Police Commissioner Nghiyalasha Haulyondjaba, together with Sergeant Jona Hamunyela and an international representative Per Sanden. Recipients of the other medals and awards fell in the "Grand Order of Namibia", "Commander of the Order Award", as well as the "Independence Medal". Notably, Nujoma also bestowed the highest first class award on his successor President Hifikepunye Pohamba during the 15th anniversary celebrations. Ghana honors Namibian President Nujoma Western African country Ghana has honored Namibia's veteran President Sam Nujoma with the highest national award of the Companion of the Order of the Star of Ghana. Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor decorated Nujoma, who ison a three-day state visit to the country, with the sash. Namibia Contingents Receive Medals The Namibian Contingent serving with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) were last weekend proud recipients of medals for their invaluable services to the peace keeping operations in Liberia. The occasion, held in Sienje, Grand Cape Mount County, sub-headquarters of the Namibian Contingent was graced by top officials of the UNMIL. The Namibian troops are under the command of Lt. Col. Namibian Troops Receive UN Medals, Urged to Remain Committed Peacekeepers of the Namibian contingent serving with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) were proud recipients of the UN medals. The event took place in Sinje, Grand Cape County, west of Monrovia, where the troops are currently serving. In a statement read by the Commander-in-Charge of the Namibian contingent, Lt. Col. Erastus Kashopola, it was recalled that the South African Nation joined the UN peacekeeping mission in 1993, just three years after its independence in 1990. Deployed in Liberia in February, Col. Kashopola said the troops have the responsibility top secure and safeguard the western corridor of the country under chapter 7 of the UN resolution, which brought them to Liberia. With the strength of 860 personnel. Since their arrival, the troops have been attached to the Pakistani contingent is responsible for Sector II in UNMIL. The Namibian Commander also recorded that the current UNMIL Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Daniel Opande, was instrumental in the formation of the Namibian Defense Force shortly following the country's independence in 1990. He said two thirds of its battalion had previously served in different foreign missions in Cambodia, Angola, Ethiopia and Eritrea including the regional peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Highest Honour for Hawala The man said to have played a central role in rooting out alleged South African spies from Swapo during the liberation struggle has been conferred with Namibia's highest award - Grand Commander of the Order of Namibian Eagle First Class.
