Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has decorated former Prime Minister Pascoal Mocumbi with the "Eduardo Mondlane Order, First Degree", the highest Mozambican award, as an acknowledgement of his services to the country. AllAfrica.com 19 Feb 04
Honours Awarded to Government Members Pascoal Mocumbi. when he left the government in February, Chissano awarded him the country's highest honour, the "Eduardo Mondlane Order, First Degree". Lower degrees of the Eduardo Mondlane Order, named after the founder of Mozambican nationalism, and the first president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), were also awarded. Thus Chissano decorated Diogo, Transport Minister Tomas Salomao, Environment Minister John Kachamila, the governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Adriano Maleiane, and the chairperson of the Mozambican parliament, Eduardo Mulembue, with the Eduardo Mondlane Order, Second Degree. The same order was awarded posthumously to Rafael Maguni, who was general secretary of the Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle, when he died in a traffic accident last year. Chissano awarded the Eduardo Mondlane Order, Third Degree, to ten other serving members of the government, including Defence Minister Tobias Dai, Foreign Minister Leonardo Simao, Education Minister Alcido Nguenha and Interior Minister Almerino Manhenje. This honour was also given to the chief of staff of the armed forces, Lagos Lidimo, and to two institutions, the state intelligence service (SISE), and the police force (PRM). Chissano also awarded the Socialist Labour Order, First Degree, to the governors of Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces, Jose Pacheco and David Simango, to cabinet secretary Carlos Taju, and to three state owned companies, the ports and railways company (CFM), the telecommunications company (TDM), and the national hydrocarbons company. allafrica.com 25 Jan 05
