• Kenya honours Mkapa President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya awarded President Benjamin Mkapa the highest Kenyan medal of honour as a gesture of appreciation for the 10 years he has led Tanzania. • President honours Kenya’s world-class athletes President Kibaki handed out a number of gongs to top Kenyan athletes in the Jamhuri Day honours list. They included world marathon record holder, Paul Tergat, Olympic and World Marathon silver medallist, Catherine Ndereba and former world record holder, Tegla Loroupe. Tergat was awarded Moran of the Order of Burning Spear (MBS), while Ndereba and Loroupe were each conferred Order of the Golden Warrior (OGW). They joined a raft of other eminent Kenyans, including Chief of General Staff General Jeremiah Kianga, in receiving awards for their distinguished service to the nation. • Slain Catholic Bishop, Two Nuns Receive National Honours A murdered Catholic bishop and two nuns are among 396 personalities honoured by the State as Kenya celebrated its 42nd Independence Day on December 12. The late Bishop Luigi Locati of Isiolo was awarded the Silver of Star of Kenya (SS) for spearheading "the growth of spiritual life for both Christians and Muslims in Isiolo for over 40 years." Sr Magdalene Muinde, the headmistress of Bahati Girls School in Machakos, and Sr Margaret Bradbury, the principal of St Paul's Teachers College in Kisii, were awarded the Head of State's Commendation (HSC). The late Anglican Bishop Alexander Kipsang Muge of Eldoret Diocese was also honoured with the Silver Star of Kenya award. "He is remembered for fighting social injustice, corruption, and tribalism and also for campaigning for democracy in Kenya." Other church leaders honoured include the current head of the Anglican Church in Kenya, Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi, former head of the Kenya Methodist Church, Bishop Lawi Imathiu and the former moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), Rev John Gatu. Others are the World Secretary General of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) Dr Musimbi Kanyoro and the National General Secretary of the YWCA, Mrs Alice Mwajuma Abok. • Murdered bishop gets Kenyan honour Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has posthumously honoured an Italian bishop who was murdered in northern Kenya this year with one of the country's highest awards for public service. Kibaki awarded the Silver Star of Kenya medal to the late Luigi Locati, whose murder in July sparked national outrage. Locati was killed outside his Isiolo parish church in an apparent power struggle and row over money in the diocese. "The late Bishop Luigi's efforts directly and indirectly affected the lives of many people in Isiolo positively," Kibaki's office said in a statement. • Queen honours Kenyan Nurse A Kenyan nurse, Mrs Sue Carr-Hartley, has been awarded the British MBE in recognition of her work. She is the Associate Director of Nursing at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi. Mrs Carr-Hartley, who is in charge of the Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit at the hospital, was awarded for a lifetime devoted to the development of nursing in Kenya. Her nursing career spans over 46 years. In 1994, Sue Carr-Hartley was the Matron of the Nairobi Hospital, where she set up a programme to deal with major disasters. • Shooters On List of Honour Two target rifle shooters are among the sportsmen and women who will be honoured by President Mwai Kibaki during the Jamhuri Day celebrations. Former full-bore champion Edward Legei and Michael Lekalaile formerly with the Kenya Police Criminal Investigation Department but now with the Presidential Escort Unit will both receive the Head of State's Commendation (HSC) in the military category. As expected, the list is crowded with athletes with the most notable being that of Chemokil Chilapong who beat all odds to win this year's Standard Chartered marathon. She will get the HSC in the civilian category. The list is headed by an award of Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (second class) to Sports Minister Ochillo Ayacko and his predecessor Najib Balala. Two athletes have been penned for the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW). They are Olympic 3,000 metres champion Ezekiel Kemboi, 22 and former Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (OGH) and former 400 metres hurdler Rose Tata Muya. The 5,000 metres Olympic Silver medallist Isabella Ochichi will receive the HSC (military). Bernard Lagat, Olympic 1,500 metres silver medallist and the 400 metres All Africa games gold medal winner Ezra Sambu are also in the list. Joyce Chepchumba who twice won the Chicago Marathon (1999 and 1998), the New York Marathon (2002) and an Olympic silver medallist over the same distance in 2000 has been given the HSC.
