Greece - A very special occasion came 58 years late for a member of the Cambridge branch of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA). Arthur Starkey, 86, was presented with the Greek Medal of Military Merit in recognition with his services to the Hellenic Air Force whilst in the RAF during WWII. The former airman found a long-forgotten citation - dated April, 1945 - from the Greek Air Ministry recommending him for the award whilst sorting out papers following the death of his wife, Margery in March, 2001. Arthur joined the RAF in 1936 as a supplier and reached the rank of sergeant before 'de-mob' in 1946. He also has the 1939-45 & Italy stars, as well as the War & Defence medals. email Tony Farrell Feb 04 |
