Salvadorans up for U.S. Army medals Six Salvadoran soldiers nominated for U.S. Army medals were cited for bravery by their own country Friday for fighting off an ambush against a convoy carrying six American officials. U.S. diplomat Phil Kosnett, who heads the Coalition Provisional Authority in the southern Iraqi city of Najaf, credited the soldiers with saving his life after insurgents ambushed the three-vehicle convoy March 5 on the road from Baghdad. Kosnett has recommended the six for the Bronze Star. About 20 insurgents fired on the convoy, which was taking Kosnett and five other Americans to Najaf. The Salvadoran troops killed several attackers, and the others gave up the chase. In a similar case, Salvadoran escorts wedged themselves between insurgents and a vehicle carrying American contractors and absorbed the incoming bullets. The 380-member battalion from El Salvador is based in Najaf, along with several hundred U.S. troops trying to wrest the city from the control of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. The battalion is scheduled to return home in August. dfw.com 8 May 04
