Order of Rio Brancol The Order of Rio Branco was created by Decree No 51.697, on February 5th, 1963 as an award to distinguished Brazilian diplomats, but can also be awarded to other officials. It has the usual five grades: Grand-Cross (pictured to the left), Grand-Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. There is a silve medal attached to the Order that uses the same ribbon. Order of the Southern Cross - Originally known as the Imperial Order of the Southern Cross and awarded to officers, NCOs and men of the Brazilian Imperial Army and Navy during the war against Paraguay (1865-1870), called War of the Triple Alliance (Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay against Paraguay). This order was certainly awarded to some members of allied armies. Founded on December 1, 1822 by Emperor Dom Pedro I, but abolished by decree of February 24, 1891. Re-established by President Getulio Vargas on December 5, 1932. The present order is awarded only to outstanding foreigners, civil and military, who have earned the gratitude of the Brazilian Government. Comes is six classes: Grand Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Official, Commander Official and Knight. Pictured here is the Grand Cross. Tamandaré Medal (Médalha Merito Tamandaré) - This medal was created by Federal Decree no. 42.111, on August 20th, 1957, and is awarded to Brazilian military personnel, civilians, and organizations that have rendered meritorious services to the Brazilian Navy. Order of Naval Merit (Ordem do Merito Naval) Founded on July 4th, 1934 by Federal Decree No. 24.569 to honour Navy personnel, Brazilian and foreign, who have served Brazil in a significant way or have distinguished themselves during the performance of their duties and, exceptionally, to civilians who have rendered relevant services to the National Navy. Naval Medal for Distinguished Services - Created by Federal Law No. 2.225, on June 12th, 1954 and reorganized by Federal Decree No. N-O.908, July 31st, 1975. It is awarded to Brazilian military personnel and civilians, as well as foreigners, who have rendered meritorious and distinguished services to the Brazilian Navy and to the Country. Imposición de medallas en la Embajada de Brasil The Commander of the Colombian Navy, Admiral Muricio Soto Gómez is awarded the Brazilian Orden del Mérito Naval, categoría Gran Oficial (Order of Naval Merit, Grand Officer class), by the Brazilian Ambassador in Bogota, Maria Celina de Azevedo Rodríguez. Lula honors Brazilian astronaut The Brazilian astronaut, Marcos Pontes, was acclaimed with the National Order of Merit, conferred by president Luiz Inácio da Silva. After reaffirming that the mission was a complete success in all respects, Pontes emphasized the importance of the experiments he conducted during the mission. "All of them were extremely important, not just for the results but for their future impact." The minister of Science and Technology, Sérgio Resende, pointed out that Pontes' space trip placed Brazil among the 15 countries that have a complete space program.
