Austrians miffed by Jackson's medal Michael Jackson at the courthouse Monday. Austrians recognized the star he on his chest as the Order of Vienna, a medal awarded to artists, businessmen or others of merit. He was never awarded the honor. Jackson’s staff bought the medal at an antiques shop in downtown Vienna. It is illegal in Austria to wear such medals if one hasn’t earned them, and Jackson theoretically could face a $919 fine. City officials say they don’t plan to press charges. msnbc.msn.com 3 Mar 05 |

Albert Schweitzer Society Medals
- Apparently these medals are awarded for Participation in Conflicts
and Humanitarian Operations. According to Professor John Kersey, The
Society (in German; Österreichische Albert Schweitzer-Gesellschaft)
maintains a webpage at http://wunderbar-media.at/oeasg
and there are depictions of some of the medals it
awards at http://wunderbar-media.at/oeasg/OASG_Dank_Annerkennung.htm.
The
Society is a very active charitable and humanitarian concern in
Austria, and is recognised by the United Nations and UNESCO as a
non-governmental organisation. It is based in Mödling and was founded
in 1984. Its medals are officially recognised by the Austrian
Bundesheer (Federal Army) and may be worn on Bundesheer uniforms. The
medals of the society are awarded regularly for significant
humanitarian, cultural and related achievement. I was greatly honoured
to be the recipient of the Medal of Honour for Science and Art in 2002
for my work as a musician. This medal is awarded annually to three
scientists, artists or musicians from around the world. There is a
ceremony for honorands, usually in Vienna or Brussels. Other honorands
include Nobel
Prize laureate Prof.
Konrad Lorenz, Prof.
Viktor Frankl, Prof.
Mathias Zirm, former Bürgermeister of Vienna Prof.
Helmut Zilk, Prof.
Otto König and American composer Richard

Austria bestows honor on Ozawa The Austrian government on Monday awarded Seiji Ozawa, the musical director of the Vienna State Opera, with the Cross of Honor for Science and Art First Class. The award is Austria's highest honor for contributions to art and culture. The director of the state opera, Ioan Holender, won a Great Golden Badge of Honor for Merit for the Austrian Republic. Ozawa was the first Japanese to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's concert. He was appointed musical director of the Vienna State Opera in the fall after resigning in August from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which he had conducted since 1973. japantimes.co.jp Dec 02
