International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Nineteen countries are providing troops to the International Security Assistance Force to assist the new Afghan Interim Authority with the provision of security and stability in Kabul.
Afghan President Named Liberty Medal Recipient Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, has been named the recipient of the 2004 Philadelphia Liberty Medal. The Philadelphia Liberty Medal was established in 1988. It honors an individual or an organization from anywhere in the world who has "demonstrated leadership and vision in the pursuit of liberty of conscience or freedom from oppression, ignorance, or deprivation." Previous winners of the medal include former President Jimmy Carter, former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, U-S Secretary of State Colin Powell and last year's recipient, U-S Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. kyw.com 26 May 04

Freed Afghan Hostages Given the Country's Second Highest Award Afghanistan's former King Zahir Shah has bestowed the nation's second highest honor on the three U.N. workers held hostage for nearly a month. He awarded the Sayed Jamaluddin Afghan medals to Annetta Flanigan from Northern Ireland and Shqipe Hebibi of Kosovo. The medal is named after a 19th century Islamic scholar. A U.N. official accepted another medal for the third hostage, Filipino diplomat Angelito Nayan, who is on his way home. voanews.com 25 Nov 04

Medal of honor: Enoch resident receives Afghan's highest honor Jeannie Thorpe, wife of Brett Thorpe of Enoch, accepted the Afghan Medal of Excellence from US Assistant Secretary of State Francis Taylor. Thorpe, under contract to the State Department as a bodyguard for Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai died of a heart attack. This is Afghanistan's highest honor the Afghan Baryal Medal.
