Jim Courier was never the star. He always came in second. He was never a showman.
In fact, he wasn't even being chased by females. He was a young, long-haired,
Floridian, with shiny braces. But Jim's talent though was more than excellent.
He had a powerful forehand which became deadly. That weapon of his led tennis
coach, Nick Bollettieri, to enroll Jim for free at his very own tennis academy
in Bradenton, Florida.
Jim experienced what he always wanted, being on his own. Although he wanted
to go to college, he felt that the academy gave him a dormitory-type of experience
where he got to wash his own clothes and do things on his own. Later, Jim met
and hit with fellow peers like David Wheaton, Malivai Washington, and the flashy
kid from Vegas, Andre Agassi. He was then included in the Junior Davis Cup team,
where he again reunited with fellow Americans, Pete Sampras and Michael Chang.
And as usual, Jim never got the attention. But there was something in Jim that
made him different and special unlike other players, and that
was his heart. Full hours of training, extreme work-out, unwillingness to give
up, and his desire to succeed opened his road to early glory. He defeated Agassi,
Sampras and the others by being the first American to be ranked no.1 in the
world since John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. He went on to win 4 grand slam titles
that includes 2 Australian Opens and 2 French Opens. Since then, the spunky,
red-haired Floridian has been known as one of the toughest and hard-working
players to have entered the tennis world.
Although Jim had a few slumps during his career, his heart still remains and
everyone sees that everytime he steps on the court. In spite of the bruises
and the pain, he's out there-blood and guts.
Last May 8, 2000, Jim Courier retired from professional tennis. But surely,
he will always be remembered not only as a gentleman of the game, but also as
one of the greatest players...ever.
