Subj: More "Pig-Cell" Info (Genzyme 1997 Annual Report)

Group -

As many of you know, I am 1 of the original 12 recipients of the "pig-cell" implants. This research is being conducted by Genzyme/Diacrin.

They contacted me a few months ago, seeking permission to feature me in their 1997 Annual Report.

The company has posted 2 photos and a short story about me on their WebSite. (ed: also see text and photos replicated below) If you're curious and have InterNet access, go to:
http://www.genzyme.com/ir/gtrar/redefine/

Then select the pink "NeuroCell" button. You can then use the right-hand scroll bar.

Regards -

Jim Finn

TEXT: (from Genzyme's 1997 Annual Report)

Jim Finn was first diagnosed with Parkinson's disease when he was 32 years old. Over the next 16 years, the symptoms progressively worsened. Jim suffered from tremors, stiffness, and fatigue. Walking, bathing, cooking, talking, and handwriting all represented significant challenges. In recent years, the standard therapies for Parkinson's disease provided only minimal relief.

In 1996, Jim accepted his doctor's invitation to participate in a clinical trial for a new type of therapy, under development through a joint venture between Genzyme Tissue Repair and Diacrin Inc. This therapy, NeuroCell-PD, is based on the transplantation of fetal porcine neural cells to replace cells destroyed by Parkinson's disease. A related product, NeuroCell-HD, is directed at Huntington's disease, also a devastating neurological disorder.

Within two months after surgery, Jim began to experience noticeable progress. He had more energy and better coordination. Motor skill tests indicated a 50-percent improvement. Today, more than a year after surgery, Jim continues to improve.
