ABOUT
JILL AND HER PROGRAM
I have a been a provider since June of 1993. I had my own children in a
wonderful child care home, Part-time. She decided to go to full-timers
only....... that's when I knew what I had to do! Become a child care
provider as wonderful as her! (Thanks Su-Su for being so wonderful!!)
My love of
children started when I was child myself. I used to baby-sit and work as a
camp counselor right after becoming too big to be a camper anymore. I always
enjoyed the freshness of the kids, how they had such a zest and love for life,
and how they knew what they wanted at such an early age.... I was nearing
college age and I still didn't know what I wanted to do with my life!
So, in
college, I studied to be a teacher...... I also studied psychology, with an
emphasis in child psychology. I student taught for a year, but wasn't
really sure if being a teacher was what I wanted to do. I loved the
children, but I wanted to spend more time getting to know them and letting them make
their own choices in what they wanted to learn........ child care became the
perfect fit! I didn't have guidelines I needed to follow, or goals to set........
for my only goal is to send a child home at the end of the day HAPPY and feeling
good about themselves and ready to return the next day to try again at something
they didn't quite accomplish. But, TRY because they had the inner desire to try,
not because it was my goal for them for the day.......
I love sharing my home with the
kids; I love to find out what they love to do and let them do it! (within
reason, hahaha!) It is my philosophy that if you let kids be kids, and
give them tons of experiences and time to be a kid, with many choices ... they
will be ready for school, ready to learn what the teachers have to say. Why?
Because they have explored their own learning senses, they are now ready
to hear from someone else. I have seen it! Even as young as 3 or
4, these little people have free rein all day (with the exception of naptime
hahaha) so when it comes to structured time, they are so READY to
participate! I would like to say that structured time is fit into my
program as freely as free play......... it is spontaneous, and I am ready for
it when the kids are ready for it, when they are all played out and ready to be sponges...... I truly believe that children can be prepared for
learning, ALL CHILDREN. All children can learn things, ALL CHILDREN want
to learn.......
Now, please don't expect my kids to walk out of my doors
having carbon copy knowledge of their peers, because they won't. They
will have learned something they were ready to learn that day. Their art
may look messy to you, but believe me, they enjoyed the PROCESS of making that
art........ and the process is the goal, not the PRODUCT.
Children are a process..... please don't expect them to
hit a certain goal within a certain time, they will come around in THEIR OWN
TIME, not ours, please don't compare them, please don't have too many
expectations..... and TRUST them, they will rise to the trust...... and you
know how important you are to them, so be careful how you react to what they
have to tell or show you.... They have just been around a few short years,
give them a chance! Hey! I have been around for 35 years, and I
have so much more to learn!
So,
my philosophy has been intertwined into my feelings about children and child
care. They are intertwined. I am their "teacher" although I am
not traditional.......
I truly believe that all these early experiences will
change a child forever, and set the foundation for all later learning......
So,
that's a little about me and my child care!
