At a time when the Detroit news media ran daily stories detailing the efforts of his underworld enemies to draw him out into the open, Chester LaMare purchased this home at 15505 Grandville Ave., in October of 1930. LaMare had reportedly left the motor city shortly after a failed attempt to gun down the leaders of the Eastside Mob in an ill advised plan which instead claimed the lives of Gaspare Milazzo and Joe Parrino in the infamous Vernor Fish Market shooting. After hiding out in Brooklyn for 4 months, LaMare made his return to Detroit housing his wife and son in the above listed property. LaMare himself rarely visited the premises and on one of the few occasions he did, he was gunned down by two members of his inner circle who traded his life for their own. The 45 year old gang leader was found dead on the kitchen floor by his second wife Anna (pictured to the right) upon her return from the drug store. LaMare henchmen Joe Amico and Elmer Macklin were tried and acquitted of the murder several months later.
