The Book House on Mango Street is a very good book. The main character Esperanza is a very intelligent young girl with a big imagination. She lives in a very poor neighborhood with her parents, Carlos, Kiki, and her sister Nenny. They have been moving from house to house even since she can remember.
Esperenza considers her self as the ugly daughter.Unlike her sister Nenny who mentions how she won't wait her whole life to get married. She mentions how with Neny's beautiful eyes it won't be hard to find a husband. Esperenza seems like she is in no hurry to oblige herself into marriage.
In the chapter entitled "Minerva Writes Poems" Esperenza recaps the events of a young person's life. Minerva is about the same age as Esperenza, but yet she has two children and a husband who left her. Her husband returns, apologizes as usual and she takes him back. After some time she comes over to Esperenza all black and blue and promises that he would never come back. The cycle reenacts itself and her mysery occurs all over again. Esperenza feels sorrow for Minerva and can not understand why she keeps on letting him in. They both let each other read their poems and Esperenza begins to realize exactly how Minerva feels.
An innocent childhood game of describing the various clouds in the ske resulted in Esperenza and her friends not talking anymore. It all started whenn the group of children were all lazily laying on the front yard examining the sky above them. Then after a few comparisions of whay the clouds resembled it started to get serious and personal. They promised never to talk again, now the only friend Esperenza had was gone.
