Me, as in Symaya Hoque

-

- My name is Symaya Hoque.I am a senior at Jamaica High School. My immmediate goal is to go to college. Eventually,I want to attend maedical school to pursue a degree in medicine. I became the person I am Today due to my surroundings at home and school. Daily, my parents help me develop as a indiviual. the two who influenced me in school were my former teacher, Sr. Patricia, and principal, Br. Nasser.

My parents work to provide for me the best life and education. They came to this country from Bangladesh so that I could benefit from the opportunities that they didn't receive. They don,t protect me from the insecurities of life but let me explore so I can grow. I have learned to value the meaning of education and reach for the highest level in life. thus shaping me to face all obstacles in my path. some people say children are prototype of their parents but I don't think so. I have become a different indiviual formulating my own beliefs. Their guidance has shaped me to believe in myself.
I use to attend private Isloamic school. Most of the teachers were consecutive and traditional. Some felt girls shouldn't go to college but follow the path of marriage and do domestic household chores. Our principal and Sr. Patricia felt otherwise. the created a program wherestudents were able to develop leadership and other skills. They dedicated so much of their time to make us better people. they touched so many students' lives including mine. I became a diligent student and the top of my class.
I use to participate in many extracurricular activities such as debates, multicultural bonanza, science fair, eloucutions, and spellling beee. I was part of the school spirit service club, literary club, drama club, fundraising commitee and team leader. By indulging in such activities provided me with preparation for college and to priortize my time. It built my self confidence and dramatically increased my grades. But unfortunately the higher authorities, who contrlled the foundation that my school was part of, decided to shut the program. They replaced my principal with someone with their mentality and removed Sr. Patricia because students were close to her. She was mor than teacher and mentor;she was my mentor.
The knowledge i received from my parents, Sr. Patricia, and Br. Nasser made me into Symaya Hoque. They taught me the world isn't a perfent place and life sometimes isn't fair but I got to learn to live with it.I am ready for the future. I might not become a doctor but I want to be the best that I can be.
