It was a Friday afternoon, about 3:30. My friend Gina was on her way to my house. I had spoken to Gina earlier that day and she told me she had somthing very serious and personal to tell me. I told her to come over so we can talk face-to-face.
Once she got to my house she was crying, so I knew this was something she was really worried about. We sat down on the couch and she began telling me her story. She told me while she was going out with her ex-boyfriend John, she cheated on him. John is also a good friend of mine, but he never told me he found out.
Gina said "I'm HIV positive."
All I could do was look in shock.
She began to cry. "It was that boy David I cheated with."She told me.
"I will help you the best way I can, even though I'm upset with you," I responded. The next day, I went with Gina to the doctor. While we were in the doctor's office I said to Gina "I know this is very hard for you, so I'm gonna do my best to be by your side."
She told me "I'm so lucky to have a friend like you."
We sat for about 30 mins waiting for the doctor. Once he finally came in he began to talk to us and try to tell her what could happen and what's going to happen.
So I asked the doctor "What can we do?" "How are we going to try and treat this?"
He told me it will be very expensive, but it doesn't mean the HIV will completely go away. I myself already knew that, I had health in school before.
I took Gina back to my house she still hadn't told her parents yet. So I let her stay at my house for a couple of days. I told my mother i need company for awhile.
Gina and I sat up that whole night trying to figure out what we were going to do about telling her parents, and her medical costs. The only solution I could think of was for her to just tell her parents. They could pay for all of that. Gina was too scared to tell them on her own because she didn't know how they would react. plus they would find out she was having sex, and that she was unprotected at that. Her parents told her about sex and protection plenty of times.
I went with Gina to her house. Like i said I was by her side the whole way through. She tried to bring the situation out in a good calm way, but there was no other way to say it. "I'm HIV positive," said Gina.
Her parents were quiet for a good 5 mins. Then her mother asked, "How did this happen Gina?" Her father asked "After all that we've taught you."
All Gina could say is "I know, I know." She sat down and talked to them. They paid for all her medical costs because they loved her and she was their only daughter.
After all that was done, Gina learned her lesson. She knows now there is nothing she can do and she can't reverse time. She apologized to John because she really regreted what she did. John forgave her, but he was just glad he never caught HIV also.
So far Gina has not caught full blown AIDS. Her parents have made sure she's got the medication she needed. She's now learning to live with it.
