"Critial Lens #1"

"Great literature shows us the worst in a human being while also revealing the best." This states that literature can show both perspectives of a person. Two works of literature can explain and give examples of this quotation: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston and Macbeth by William Shakespeare.

In the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, a man named Jody is a good example. Jody was a very strong, determined man. He wanted to help the town which he lived in. He managed the store in town, and was mayor of his town. On the other hand he was very controlling to his wife Janie. He believed women were to be seen and not heard. It seemed as she was below him and he kept her that way.

In the play Macbeth by William Shakepeare, Macbeth was a nice and caring husband and father. He did everything for his family, but in this play, Macbeth began to doubt his man-hood. He wanted to be king, but another person named Duncan was to be king. Macbeth took things into his own hands. So he murdered Duncan, to take his place. He also murders others who stand in his way.

In conclusion literature may show the worst in a human being, but if you pay attention, it will show that it is revealing the best in that person as well.
