While You Were Sleeping

In the early 1990’s there were many mysterious things going on in a little town in Spain. Things always ended up different or changed. All the people were scared and were warned not to leave because the spirits might follow them and the evil would spread. I was only 14 when all of this was going on but I remember it like it was yesterday.
My family and I felt that it would be better for us to leave then to just wait around and let trouble come to us. We packed our thing and got on a little plane. This plane must have had a lot of durability because we went through many storms and had to make a crash landing. Yet we still survived and found ourselves in the U.S. For the first couple of months, even though we some inclination to leave things were fine. My parents got jobs and my sister was doing well in school and so was I. We thought all our troubles were gone. We were so so wrong.
One night my sister woke up screaming. “It’s just a little bruise you have from sleeping rough Maria” my mother Teresa said.
“Yes, just clam down and go back to sleep. It will be okay. We will worry about this in the morning,” my father Jorge said. “Michelle, make sure you wake your sister up if you hear her tossing and turning next time” he said to me.
We all went back to sleep not worrying about what happened or thinking about things that happened back in Spain. For the next couple of days she kept ending up with burns and bruises when she woke up. I sometimes heard her at night making sudden movements. With all the tossing and turning she did I also heard her making a weird noise like something was irritating her. One morning I decided to tell my parents about what was going on. “She sound like something is really bothering her. It’s too dark in our room to see anything so I don’t bother to look at her to see what is going on.” I said to them.
“Michelle, it’s just in your mind. Nothing is going on with your sister,” my father said.
“But I have shared a room with her for year and she has always slept quietly and calmly for as long as I can remember.”
“Stop talking this nonsense. You are scaring yourself and your sister.”
“I have to admit I do feel a little weird at times during the night, like I am not my self, like something is burning me,” Maria said.
“New surroundings do make people sleep uncomfortable and they might have nightmares sometimes. Just wait and see what happens. Try to stop sleeping so rough,” he said. My father always had words of comfort for us when we were troubled. Stunningly this time he even seemed a little freaked out. His face just had a very astonished look on it like he knew what was going on but he just didn’t want to tell us. The look on his face made me feel like there was much more horror to come. I did not know what to do some I figured I would have to spy on my parents to find something out.
I overheard my mother on the phone with one of my aunts back in Spain. She sounded like she also knew what was going on. She was thinking hard and listening to my aunt like she was getting advice from her. That night, before my sister and I went to sleep, my mother put some crushed leaves and seeds under the window seal in our room. That night, my sister slept regular and woke up without any new burns or marks on her. I didn’t want to mention anything to my mother about what I heard or why my sister didn’t end up with any marks that night. I knew that it would put her in an uncomfortable state, and she really didn’t want to explain to us what was going on.
Every night she made sure there was enough seeds and leaves left inside to keep us safe. I then knew something was definitely going on. I tried my hardest not to ask my parents about what was happening but I couldn’t take it anymore. I went to my mother and I told her that I noticed what she was doing and I heard her conversation with my aunt. She told me that the smell of the seeds and leaves help my sister calm down and sleep better at night. I just smiled and happily agreed. Any other time I would have believed her, but this time I couldn’t. I tried to think of a plan to find out what was happening with the little information I knew. I didn’t know what I was doing or all the trouble I was getting myself into.
That night, after my mother checked the seeds and leaves, she went straight to bed. I got up and cleared all the seeds and leaves and I threw them out the window. All night I stayed up and waited for something to happen. After a while I could hardly keep my eyelids open. I saw a quick flash go across my room like there was a light outside and it seemed as if it tried to lobby me toward the window. I got up to look out the window and I saw a huge ball of flame on my lawn. I heard my sister scream louder than ever before. I turned around and saw a huge flash shoot across the room and go through the wall. Suddenly I felt a qualm. I was so shocked that the only thing I could do was scream.
My parents quickly came into the room and I told them what I saw. They tried to tell me I was dreaming again but I wouldn’t listen. I brought them to the window and showed them how the whole lawn was burned. Not only did they see that but also the ball of fire that was rising toward our window.
The ball of fire was rising very slowly, and then quickly it shot through the window and broke it. It disappeared inside my sister’s body. My sister got up and began to speak weirdly. “ You have displeased the spirits and now you must pay!”
“What exactly have we done,” my mother said. “We have done nothing but good for as long as I can remember”
“Foremost you must not lie in front of your children. Tell them how you have killed and deceived to make it was to this sinful place. You and your wife attained human bodies in the most barbarous ways. You are spirits just as I, and so are your children.”
“You are mistaken. We are as real as the world we are suppose to live in.”
“YES. You are as real as the world you are SUPPOSE to live in. But I have to admit you have used your bodies in the most useful ways.” At this point I was freaked out but my parents didn’t seem scared at all.
My father got a look of comfort on his face, and then he began to speak sounding like his trough was arid. “Okay, please forgive us. We will come clean right now, just don’t harm us anymore. Maria, Michelle, your mother and I have something very important to tell you.”
I am now 22. I have to say that living in the ghost world for the past few years has not been so bad. I still miss some things about the actual human body, but it’s not so bad being a ghostly spirit. The best thing is we can go bother the humans that have no idea we exist. I just want to tell you that I hope you don’t wake up in the morning with burns all over your body.
