"We do not have a money problem in America. We have a values and priorities problem." Marian Wright Edelman
This quotation by Edelman has much truth behind it. We as Americans are very materialistic. The only reason why people claim to have a money problem is becasue they use all the money they have to buy the latest outfits such as Fubu, Roca Wear, Jordons etc. It seems to many that the most important aspect about being American is all the style and money it represents.
One case of this is that of the college education. Granted that college is expensive, however, if it were our first priority and we managed the money we earned it would be a great advantage to us later. Kids today are more worried about the lastest fasions that are coming out than they are with college. If you were to add up all the money that we spend on clothing, makeup, hair etc, you could afford a college education.
However, it isn't all on the individual. All Americans praise one another if they look "good" in the latest hair style, or the color of the season. No matter how valueless and vain this is no one acknowledges the fact. Leaving the most important things in life such as education, health care and food to the bottom of the list.
