My Life

Autobiography

My name is Emily Violette Estime'. I was born to two parents from Haiti, on March 19,1988 in Queens General Hospital. Now, sixteen years later, I am a Jamaica High School junior with one year till graduation and a year and a half till I begin college. I see myself as an ambitious, self-motivated optimist. I also see myself as a strong-minded, realist and intelligent young woman. My journey to this point of maturity, however not yet completed, has had three major influences: a former relationship, school and a woman who has just recently befriended me. These three major influences in my life have contributed to the development of who I am.
The influence of a former relationship that failed miserably, has had a big impact on me. The fact that I can accept forgive myself for the things that I truly regretted doing in the past, establish my self-love, respect, and confidence which I realized I had little of when I jumped into this relationship. The major part of that experience that has influenced me was when I first became sexually active. I was only fourteen years old and I had just begun high school. I felt alone, depressed and frustrated. When this boy came along, those feelings disappeared. However, then I realized that I was depending on him to validate me and build up my self-esteem and confidence. I wanted him to love me because I didn't fully love myself. Then just a few months later, we broke up and I was lost. That is when I realized I had to believe in myself enough to develop my own self-esteem, love and confidence. From that time two years ago, I have learned a lesson and realized I wasn't old enough to be in that kind of relationship. This event influenced me to be by myself, love myself and get an education which I've found to be more important than boys and relationships.
My second major influence is school. Many of my teachers motivate me to stay strong and go for what I want. They help me improve my weaknesses and further develop my strengths. School also exposes me to different types of people from diverse cultures that I'll probably never encounter again. School influences me to better myself. It has helped me create logical thinking, diminish stereotypes and look at my future in another way. Now I find it imperative to get as much of an education as possible.
I find that life is so much more enriching when you understand the past and you are able to use that information to create a beautiful future. The second thing that makes school a big influence on me is the teachers themselves. Many of my teachers I know could care less what happens to me. However, there are the select few that even long after I had completed their class, still encourage, motivate and praise me. Teachers like that show me that there is still some generosity and caring in some people.
The third influences in my life as just come along recently. I met Ms. Certha Johnson through a girl I worked with during summer youth. She was the girls' guardian and even though the girl moved away since then, Ms. Johnson has remained my friend. She gives me strength and hope. She helped me through the past year which has been rough for me. Sometimes I find that when I'm near the end and just talking to her gives me the guidance that I need. It's said that everybody needs someone outside of themselves to get through life and that's what she is for me. I know she won't always be there for me physically, but as long as she is there now, I know I'll be able to go on with the reminder of her.
Even though I am writing about my life, it has yet to reach its climax. I see myself going to college in the next couple of years. In college I will study Computer Science and dual major in Business Management. I hope to get my masters in both these areas. My future career will be as a Systems Analyst. I'll be supervising the programmers and maybe even becoming the head of the technological department of a medium to large sized company. I hope to work for IBM or Microsoft.
