What relationship, if any, does gangster rap music and stress have ?

Questions relevant to my research:
**Does Gangster Rap music cause memory loss?
**Does Gangster Rap music act and affect human beings the same way that stress has been labeled as doing?
**Does Gangster Rap music only affect black males?

The state of tension that is created when a person responds to the demands of society is stress. Stress is synonymous with change. Anything that causes a change in your life yields stress. Regardless if the stress can be classified as being good or bad, it still causes a serious strain on the body and the mind. Stress is an epidemic that is killing more and more people each year. Statistics done by researchers have proven that black males are the division of the population most often affected by stress. Stress is a factor that has been pinpointed as the stimulus that escalates cases of high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, ulcers, heart attacks, cancer and suicide. Studies have shown that hostility within a person could consequently cause stress. In my research, one factor that is being labeled as being directly related to hostility and possibly related to stress is being gangster rap music. Modern culture music, especially gangster rap, has been labeled as the cause of hostility, anger, rage, violence and disrespect in today's youth. This theory is being considered especially true for black males because rap music is a reflection of the attitudes and perceptions of the black masses.

Modern psychologists have theorized that stress affects an individuals ability to free recall things from their memory. In my research, I collected a sample of students to test them on their ability to recall the placements of certain pictures in a similar way in which the game Concentration is played.

Initially, I will test my sample groups ability to recall the placements of these pictures before the stimulus, gangster rap music, is applied. Then, after the stimulus is applied, I will then re-test my sample group once again on their ability to recall the placement of the pictures. In my research, gangster rap music is the stimulus acting as if it was stress to see if it yields the same response from the body. In other words, I am seeing whether or not gangster rap music can cause memory to be clouded as stress has been labeled as possibly doing.

Today's youth are seriously troubled and something needs to be done about it. Neither life nor education is important to them. The source of this dangerous mentality needs to be found and altered to save lives and futures. Music is often being identified as the culpable party in causing individuals to do things that society doesn't approve of or consider acceptable. Gangster rap music and Hard Metal are at the forefront of the genres of music accused of such actions. If gangster rap music is found to be responsible for hostility, related somehow to stress and the cause of memory loss in young people, then some sort of reform needs to be done concerning this popular form of expression. In addition, parents need to become aware of this and make some promises to sit down with their children to prevent them from becoming so negatively and drastically affected by music.

  • Background Information

The objective of my research is to study and analyze whether or not gangster rap music affects an individuals ability to recall information. There are 6 main categories that help to explain the purpose of my research. These categories include: Gangster rap music and the Hip-hop culture, Stress, Memory, Hostility and the Black family/ Black culture.

  • Gangster Rap Music and the Hip-Hop Culture

  • The central element of my research concerns the effect music has on a person. Music has always played a role in the history of society. Music comes in all different forms in different languages, with different beats, different messages and sounds. But, all the forms of music have the hope and intention to entertain its fans and the audience. One of the most controversial forms of musical expression in history is rap music. It continues to be fiercely debated because of its incredible boldness and temerity.

    I. What is Rap Music?

Rap music represents the efforts of people of all nationalities, races, genders, religions, and ages. But, primarily rap music is the voice of the youths of today's society. Rap music is one of the four main forms of expressions categorized as being Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop music is arguably the most verbal, boisterous forms of musical expressions ever seen in history. Rapping is the art of writing and performing rhymes. Rhymes are written words placed to music to relay a story. Rap music is a story. Rap is a story of experiences, tragedies, comedies, loves and losses. The artist performing the rap creates and plans the rhymes to his song with intentions to tell a story while the disc jockey provides the music.

II. Where did Rap Music originate?

The late 1970s and the early 1980s marked the beginning of the phenomena we know identify as rap music. Rap music emerged out of the streets of the poor neighborhoods of the South Bronx and Brooklyn. This popular form of music has gotten some of its uniqueness and flare from traditional African drums, punk rock, disco, rock and roll, and West Indian beats. All these forms of music have had a huge impression on rap and what it is today.

III. What is the purpose of Rap music?

The very essence of rap, as stated earlier, arose from the ghettos of New York City. Rap music is a symbolic representation of the feelings and thoughts rappers have toward social ills that they are faced with each day. Rap music allows individuals to fully address their feelings towards different issues freely and artistically.

IV. What is Gangster Rap music?

There are definitely distinct differences present when a comparison is made between early day rap music, pop rap music and gangster rap music. The music of the early 1980s created the mold for rap music. When rap music first entered the scene, it was used to entertain people and put a smile in their face and put joy in their heart. In those times, rap music was considered a fun act of persuasion and it was categorized by a rappers ability to syncopate to a beat and accurately relay their story. This type of music was an activity performed to pass the time and stay out of trouble. It was and still is a extremely creative activity.

Pop rap music is a term used to classify rap music that is softer and less aggressive than songs produced by gangster rap artists. Pop rap music involves beats and lyrics that are way more socially acceptable than lyrics performed by gangster rappers. Examples of pop rap music artists are Will Smith, Run DMC, Christian rap and many others. The main definition of a pop rap tune is a song that doesn't have any foul language in it and that doesn't discuss so vividly the problems faced in everyday life. Gangster rap music is political, empathetic and rough while pop rap music is jovial, simplistic and non-aggressive. In no way am I stating that all gangster rap music has curses in them, but most of them do.

Gangster rap music breaks all the traditional music barriers. There is no huge similarity between present day gangster rap music and earlier day rap music. Nor is there a huge similarity between pop rap music and gangster rap music. One comparison that all forms of rap music have is the intention to entertain and educate those people who listen and appreciate rap. One characteristic that separates gangster rap music from all the other forms is that gangster rap music openly and vividly discusses death, murder, drugs, sex and crimes. Songs that have been categorized as being gangster rap have bad-mouthed and disrespected women and have detailed and glamorized plots of murder. Critics of gangster rap music have stated that present day artists have transformed a form of expression into a genre of music that is extremely violent and dangerous. But rap music, since its inception, has received constant strife from both its critics and listeners who have claimed that rap was too harsh, too monotonous and lacking in melodic value. In opposition, those individuals in support of the controversial style of music found an immediate attraction to rap music and were instantly connected to it. They felt that it directly relates and addresses their day-to-day reality in the ghetto in a confrontational way that was never tried before. Of all the many categories of hip-hop music, gangster rap has most aggressively narrated the paths and possibilities, the fantasies and fears, of poor black urban youths.

    V. Is opposition to gangster rap music justified?

Supporters of rap music say that both society and the media fail to acknowledge the affect of music and the actual importance of it. Gangster rap music is frequently rebuked and censored by those who hear in it only violence and explicit sex and offensive lyrics. Critics and censors of the music point out and focus on the violence, materialism, discrimination and sexual transgression so often portrayed and commercialized in modern music. Critics have also said that the lyrics in rap music that glamorize violence, will eventually cause a terrible and lasting problem. If this were true, it would be understandable and justifiable for people to be concerned for the welfare of themselves and others. But, those in support of gangster rap music view it at a deeper level. Supporters yearn for the music to be understood as being political. And that it is a collective expression of the experiences faced by today's youth. Supporters also claim that gangster rap music is harmless and simply for the purposes of entertainment and profit. Another supporter of rap music states that the opposition towards rap music is driven by societies fear of black men and societies perception that black youths are always violent. Another supporter reveals the finally thought: if gangster rap music was a form of expression done by white youths, then society would accept the art and perceive it as being socially compatible.

  • Stress

  • The purpose of my research is to examine what relationship, if any, does stress and gangster rap music have. Stress is an extremely crucial element of my research. I believe that there is a relationship between gangster rap music and stress.

    I. What is stress?

Stress is the state of tension that is created when a person responds to the demands and pressures that come from the outside (society, family, work, etc.), as well as those that come from the inside (personal goals and demands, religion, etc.). Demands and pressures require some kind of response. Any response, regardless of how small, involves some sort of immediate reaction from the body. Our bodies experience stress when the body tries to adjust to external and internal demands. The body is always seeking a resolution to what ever is stressing it because the body needs to maintain stability to remain healthy. A number of studies done have shown that stress is both additive and cumulative. What this means is that the demands and concerns faced daily by all people adds up over time and ultimately creates a total burden of problems that the body has to face and overcome.

II. Who is affected by stress?

Stress affects individuals of all shapes and sizes. Stress doesn*t discriminate. Teenagers, adults, blacks, whites, petite people and even obese people could be affected by stress.

III. What are the different types of stress?

  • Survival Stress

This type of stress occurs when a person's survival and health is threatened, when a person is put under pressure, or when a person experiences some sort of unpleasant or challenging event.
  • Internally generated Stress

This type of stress occurs when an individual is indulged in excessive worrying and anxious feelings about what is beyond their own control.

  • Environmental and Job stress

An individual*s living and environmental circumstances causes environment and job stress. The source of this type of stress could possibly be overcrowding of one's neighborhood, noise, pollution, untidiness, dirtiness, or any other distraction.

  • Fatigue and Overwork

This type of stress occurs when the demands and pressures of the outside and inside world finally accumulate and finally take a toll on the body. This can occur to a person who tries to achieve too much and lacks enough time or lacks time management.

IV. Which of the following are forms of stress?

    1. You have been married for eight years and you and your estranged spouse are going through a horrible and bitter divorce. The kids are caught in the middle and you yearn for a resolution to your problems.

    2. Your daughter has finally reached her senior year in high school and was accepted to a fantastic university on a full scholarship. She is graduating this coming Tuesday. You are excited, happy and worried about her future. But, you are extremely proud of her and her achievements.

    3. You have just received a raise and a promotion at your job. It seems as though those twelve years of hard work has finally paid off. Now, you can buy yourself a new car and live your life to its ultimate.

    4. Your best friend is having a party and you know that is going to be great. You arrive at the party and you see people that you knew from high school there that you have not seen since graduation nine years ago. You spend the whole night laughing and reminiscing about the good old days. The music at the party is great and your night was fantastic.

Which of the following are forms of stress (1,2,3 or 4)?

They all are forms of stress. As stated earlier, any sort of change, whether it is a positive or negative change, still yields some sort of physical strain and response from the body.

    V. How does stress affect individuals?

Stress is inevitable. No one goes throughout life without being exposed to stress. But, stress could either be beneficial or detrimental depending on how a person deals with it. A minimal amount of stress can initialize some sort of positive reaction in a person. On the other hand, stress that is excessive can cause serious health problems and possibly be fatal. Stress has been confirmed as being either directly or indirectly the cause of heart disease, hypertension, sudden death, cancer, suicide, depression, anxiety, and a plethora of infections and immune system disorders.

VI. Stress and Memory (A Case Study)

Psychologists at the University of Zurich and the University of California hypothesized that stress impairs memory and learning. Researchers found that when their sample group was under stress, they were less able to remember things that they had just recently learned. The researchers used cortisol, a hormone secreted when under stress, as their stimulus. In my research, I am using gangster rap music to try to prove a similarity and a relationship between rap and stress. The researchers asked their sample group to memorize sixty German nouns, which they looked at for four seconds each. Immediately after memorizing a list or one day later, the sample group was asked to free call as many words as possible. The researchers then dispensed the cortisol, which stimulated stress in the volunteers. It was concluded that the stimulus applied did not affect the volunteers' ability to recall the given list of nouns.

VII. How does the previous case study affect my research?

Because of the results gotten in the above research, I anticipating that my results will be similar. There are only slight differences between my research and the researchers.

  • Memory

    I. What is memory?

Memory is the construction and reconstruction of past events and experiences in a person's life that are of some significant value. Memory can be based around socially constructed meanings. In other words, memory can be categorized by universal ideas and themes or by a person's particular subgroup or subculture (social class, gender, etc.).

II. What are the different types of memory?

There are two ways to classify memory: remembering and forgetting. Psychologists have stated that the items that stimulate both these processes are very complex and are certainly is impacted by society.

  • Remembering

Remembering things is an active process, and is very complex. It involves the examination of society and internal feelings. Remembrance is the choosing of which experiences and which aspects of those experiences to reflect upon. It takes work to try to remember things. The act of remembering is understandable and describable.

  • Forgetting

On the other hand, forgetfulness is not fully understood and is quite often debated on. People in the medical field aren't sure on whether or not forgetfulness happens by mistake, or on purpose.

    III. What is Motivated Forgetfulness?
Motivated forgetting has been classified as occurring when a person doesn't want to accept ideas that are painful and that they refuse to accept in their lives. This is because the forced and painful idea doesn't fit into what the person feel their life should be like.

IV. What does Motivated Forgetfulness have to do with my research?
What relationship does Motivated Forgetfulness and hostility have?

The main point of my research is to prove that black males' memory is affected because it is hard for them to accept the realities discussed in gangster rap music. They realize the truthfulness present in the lyrics of the rap songs, but they can't willfully accept reality. The issues spoken of in gangster rap music are painful and cause fear when talked about. And of course these young men don't discuss their feelings because they are socialized to keep their true "soft" feelings hidden. So, one way to release their built up frustration is to take their anger out on others. The other is forgetting everything that caused them pain and forgetting everything that they associate with that painful memory. The deliberate disregard for painful events is called suppression. Suppression is defined as the deliberate and direct act of pushing aside feelings or ideas that you really wish not to think about or concern yourself with.

  • Black Men/The Black Culture

    I. What is a minority?
A minority are subordinate segments of complex societies;(2) minorities have special physical or cultural traits, which are held in low esteem by the dominant segments of the society;(3) minorities are self-conscious units bound together by the special traits which their members share and by the special disabilities which these bring. By the definition of what a minority is, one would somewhat begin to feel simply any person classified as being a minority.

  • Hypothesis

Gangster rap music causes young black males to become hostile which in turn affects their ability to recall things from their memory. Because gangster rap music discusses pessimistic yet realistic topics, I believe that it causes young black males to question society and it causes them to eventually recognize their situation and place in society. By analyzing society and it*s many faults, black males realize and become confronted with the prejudices, injustices, and hardships that they are forced to accept. This in turn creates hostility, anger and rage that consequently lead to the same results that stress causes to the body. Stress has been labeled as possibly altering memory. This has led me to believe that gangster rap music can also be labeled as altering memory.

  • Experiment

I grouped a sample group of twenty youths to test the accuracy of my hypothesis. I grouped this sample group from Jamaica High School. The students were selected at random. My sample consisted of students who were between the ages of fifteen and eighteen years old. I initially gave my sample group a questionnaire that would allow me to evaluate the levels of stress physically, emotionally, socially, mentally and spiritually that they have prior to beginning my experiment. This is Part A of my experiment. I created a board of five different shapes in five different colors in a way that is similar to the way in which the game Concentration is played. This part of my experiment involved my sample group trying to recall the placement of different color shapes on a white board. The five different shapes were: hearts, arrows, squares, circles and rectangles. Each shape had a different color: hearts=blue, arrows=orange, squares=green, circles=red and rectangles=yellow. This is Part B of my experiment. The board consisted of a total of twenty shapes and each sample member is allotted one (1) minute to try to memorize the positions in which the shapes are placed. Each sample member will then be asked to recall the placement of those shapes by drawing a replica of all the shapes that they remember from the board on a sheet of white paper. This part of my experiment is the control group because at this point no stimulus, which is gangster rap music, is applied. Part C of my experiment involved me playing one (1) gangster rap song for my sample group and showing them the same exact board of shapes and colors used in Part B of my experiment. The song that was played in my experiment was ※ §. I allotted my sample group twenty seconds to review the board while the rap song played in the background. The song played for them lasted three minutes and fifteen seconds. I played the song until it ended. I did not replay the song a second time. After the song had completed, I asked my sample group to draw a replica of all the shapes that they remember from the board on a sheet of white paper again. I then reviewed the drawings of my sample group and recorded the results in a table for analysis. This marked the end of my experiment.
