My Favorite Diva: Brandy
Brandy Norwood popped on the scene at the young and ripe age of 16. She entered the scene with a voice sent from God and dreams bigger enough for a 7 foot grown man. She is the same old Brandy she has always been, but to me she is a role model and my favorite diva.
Brandy is not just another singer or entertainer. She symbolizes what a strong, black woman should be and represent. She has made dreams and expectations for herself and has accomplished them. She dreamed of becoming an actress, and guess what she is. She dreamed of becoming a singer, and guess what she is. She dreamed of sharing her passions and desires with the world and her fans, and guess what she has and always will.
Brandy got her start on the hit show "Thea". This show introduced Brandy to the media world and prepared us all for her entrance on the musical, acting and modeling scene. Following being a cast member on "Thea", Brandy set her mind on becoming an entertainer and becoming just like HER role model: Whitney Houston. At the age of 16, Brandy recorded her first self-entitled album that made her a household name and a household face. From that moment, the "Brandy" era began. Her future as a singer, actress, producer and song writer commenced and there was no stopping Brandy.
"Everybody say Moesha!" On Monday nights at 8 o'clock eastern time, I sing along at the top of my lungs to the "Moesha" intro song. "Moesha" is the television show starring Brandy which has just completed five successful seasons. "Moesha" is a fun and youthful sitcom that depicts the life of a motivated, intelligent and beautiful teenage girl who enjoys life and seizes every moment. The cast of "Moesha" has allowed it to be the astonishing success it is. The "Moesha" sitcom is just another accomplishment under Brandy's belt.
Every girl's dream is to become Cinderella. Everyone has read, seen, heard or has been read to the story of "Cinderella". Well, Brandy in 1998 starred as Cinderella in the television broadcasted version of Cinderella with such breath-taking and legendary stars as Whoppi Goldberg and Whitney Houston. Brandy brought life and passion into the magical fairy tale and rekindled a little spark in every girl's eye. She again made it possible for young females to reassure themselves that they too are special and deserve a prince charming just like Cinderella AND Brandy.
Brandy Norwood is a young woman who knows what path she yearns to take and on a daily basis strives with the assistance of God to reach that place. I met Brandy one time in John F. Kennedy airport in New York City and I felt a warmth and sisterly-vibe from her. I became entranced with her power, self-esteem and pride that she exulted. She appeared to be as nice and down-to-earth as she appears in her interviews and videos. From the moment of our meeting in the airport, I made a promise to follow and pay attention to her career. My reasoning was not to idealize her and praise her for the money she makes or concerts that she performs. My purpose was to try to further understand the African-American woman she is and the woman she yearns to represent for other young girls. Once I had a dream that I called Brandy on the phone and we hung out and simply acted as though we were friends. This dream lead me to believe and realize that Brandy is someone who deserves my love, respect and appreciation.
A role model is a person you can base your life (job, goals, aspirations, faith, beliefs) according to. In my opinion, a role model is a simply a person that helps you to be and represent the person you “truly” need and want to become. Brandy is my role model because she helps me understand that ANYTHING is possible when you have faith in yourself and in God.
