Remembering My Black Roots:
Celebrating Black History Month
It is February Again! Those some old Matin Luther King Jr.
and Oprah Winfrey posters you have seen since third grade go up again on yours school's wall. Just when you feel like ripping those posters down, take time out to read them. Allow yourself to explore African-American culture and achievement. You will be surprised!
There are so many milestone African-Americans that can be observed and celebrated in Black History Month. Individuals who have risked and sacrificed their lives for an appropriate cause: "true" freedom.
It has been a long stuggle for African-Americans to both gain and hold on to both their freedom and appreciation. But, it is not over. It took the horrible assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. to finally cause the United States to change. African-Americans were going to college, but they had no respect. African-Americans were holding and getting well paid job positions, but they were not getting respect.
Blach History Month isn't just a month for African-Americans to celebrate. It is a time in which ALL americans of all races, nationalities, and ethnicities to pay both love and respect to those who came before them and paved the long trail. It is time to celebrate those who wanted something better for themselves and you.
