I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings

In the memoir "I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings" Maya Angelou went throught a lot. During her chilhood she was teased because of her skin color and her hair. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, an account of her youth, describes the trauma of being raped as a child, the violent death of her attacker, and her subsequent refusal to speak for five years. It has been the target of many censorship attacks."I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," gives the reader a look at the life of a young black girl's experiences. Angelou uses colorful detail and excellent imagery. I believe she involved the reader in her life and of those around her. I could imagine what it felt like to be Maya! This memoir also made me relize the things that people have to live through.I believe this is an excellent book for anyone to read, but the sexual abuse issues Angelou describes in Chapters 11 and 12 are graphic, and I don't believe they would be appropriate for very young readers.I liked Angelou's account at the end of the book when her mother brought her newborn son to her: Mother whispered, "See, you don't have to think about doing the right thing. If you're for the right thing, then you do it without thinking." This Quote is very much true and also has a very powerful meaning. This is consider to be one of Maya Angelou best selling novel.
