This book is about a girl named Marguerite and her brother Bailey.They lived in California.Their parents got separated.So they had to go and live with their grandmother.Their father's mother.After a while living with their grandmother,they started calling her "Momma."Marguerite loved reading Shakespeare's books.
She said that he was her first love.
Living in California was not good for her because of the white people there.When she was 13years old she've moved from California to Arkansas for good.That's where her grandmother owned a store.They grew crops in their garden.
After living in Stamps, Arkansas she noticed that alot of kids have travelled from south to North.
She and her brother started school there.Her principal was the type of person that don't like to talk much to others.
On Sundays they go to church. Her grandmother like to sing and hum while doing things.A year later her father came to Stamps without warning.
Her dad took them to ST.Louis to meet their mother.After a few days he left.She was living with her grandmother Baxter.She was nearly white.
She and her brother was enrolled in Toussaint L'Ouverture Grammer School.They were strucked by the ignorance of their schoolmates and the rudeness of their teacher.Only the vastness of the building impressed them. They were moved a grade level up in school because the teachers thought that the classmates would feel interior.
Her mother introduced her to her friends.She thinks that her mother was the only warm,outgoing,personality among her siblings.
They lived in a big house on Carolina Street with her grandmother for half year before their mother moved them in with her.Moving meant nothing to her.If they got on her mother's nerve or be disobedient they would've been sent back to STAMPS.
Her mother's boyfriend Mr.Freeman lived with them.He was a southerner and big, but a little flabby.Her mother was light skinned with straight hair.She thinks her mother's boyfriend is lucky because her mother is really pretty.Her mother is a nurse. She earns extra money by playing games in gambeling parlors.After graduation she and her brother went and live with her dad.She did not get along with her father's new girlfriend at all.To her the easiest thing was to ran away from home.She stayed in a junk place for at least a month.
She then went back and live with her mother.She wish if Bailey was there with her.Her mother and Bailey were fighting.so Bailey moved out of the house.
She asked a guy to live nearby to have sex with him.She thought maybe she doesn't have a woman's touch no more.Later she got a job at the streets of San Francisco.streets cars.Later she got a baby boy for the guy that she was having a relationship with .
I think this book is related to many stories that I've heard before.It shows how you have to keep your mouth shout sometimes,even though it hurts alot.Marguerita was raped when she was 8years old.That was a very horriable situation for her.
She had to pretend that everything was fine.After a while she told her brother what happened to her.I think for a young girl, she've been through alot.She had to move from place to place.She also got fired for messing up at her job.Her parents had a divorce,so she had to live with her grandmother.The good thing is that she had her brother with her.
