The Color of Water

By James cBride
I have a question about the mother in the story. I want to know why she would rather be married to a black man than with a white man?My friend Kwame thinks that the mother is bitter. However, I disagree. I don't think that you should say thst she is bitter. It's just that she would rather keep her personal life a secret. I think that I can relate to this situation because my mother is the same way. I ask her questios about her personal life and it's like she would shut me out. All I wanted was to get to know my mother better to establish a good "mother-daughter" relationship. I thought that in those days families always talked about the past. Why does James not understand that his mother is white and not black? Why can't the mother just explain to her children that they are black and white? It's not hard at all. Maybe it can help them find who they are as individuals. Some of the older ones already have, but if she starts with the younger ones no they'll have a lot to look forward to in the future. I think that this is such a sad book. This family is falling apart. Ruth's family is the worst. Her father was a disgusting man. How can you have sex with your own child? It's unheard of. There can be no good result from it. I could never stand for it. I understand now why Ruth, as she later called herself, preferred black men over white. And I agree, a lot of black folks don't care what others think about them. They are a humble folk who bothered no one. Well, maybe not in those days but today there are still some who are the same. There was too much going on in those days, too much. However, things haven't changed much. Teens are still using drugs, family members still neglect the others and only care about money. It's a shame that life is the way it is. I thought that this was a great book. It was so real and so sad. I laughed, I cried. I couldn't believe it. I really don't like to read and there are few books that I have read and enjoyed. This is one that I would love to read again and again.
