The Color of Water by James McBride

The Color of Water by James McBride

James McBride learned many lessons from his mother. One of the very first lesson his mother taught him was to educate himself. She told James that a person without education is nobody. Ruth McBride was very religious, she would tell her son James to put God first in his life. Another lesson James learned from his mother was that money means nothing if your mind is empty. Mrs McBride loved her children, although she was very strict with them. The reason she was strict was because she wanted the best for them.

The memoir The Color of Water by James McBride is a very fascinating story. It is the story of a family that stuck together through the good times and through the bad times. I enjoyed reading the memoir. One lesson that I learned from it is that a person can succeed in life no matter how rich or poor that person is. For instance, Mrs McBride had twelve children, eventhough she did not have a lot of money, she put her twelve children through college and she also went to college.

The Color of Water is a book that deals with many controversial issues such as RACISM , HATE , VIOLENCE , INCEST , RELIGION , and POVERTY . The main issue in the memoir is race. James is confused because he is colored and his mother is white. Throughout the novel, James makes many comparisons between the black race, and the white race.

The Color of Water is an excellent piece of work that I will recommand anyone to read because there are many themes that could be learned from this great memoir.
