THE WIRED CLASSROOM

The Wired Classroom

It's 11:35. Thousands of teenagers are signing on to the internet every minute. I know you're probably thinking "How would kids be on the internet when their supposed to be in school?" The reason: cyber English electives. Some English teachers have come up with a new curriculum in which students can enhance their writing skills and have fun at the same time. Each student developed his or her own werb site and filled it with objects to his or her liking. Since the English elective I'm taking is based on memoir writing, three links were made to display critiques on memoirs such as the Color of Water by James McBride and When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. In reference to these two memoirs, I created my own memoir. I also wrote an autobiography so others surfing the net know what type of person I am.

On a personal note, I feel that English electives such as the one that I'm in is a great opportunity for students to learn how to publish their works on the internet and share their works with the rest of the world. Students can then give each other feedback on what they wrote and improve upon it. In addition, I think a cyber English elective sets itself apart from other English classes in that there are little restricitons. The majority of the time, the high school curriculum requires students to read boring novels in which they have to disect the book to pieces. How can you enjoy a book if every second you're picking out little details? Now I feel I can express myself more.
A new era has arrived. One that I think will lead education into the new millenium.
