A man and a woman were walking along the boardwalk on a clear, warm starlit night. The woman decided to see how much the man she was with cared for her. After a long tender kiss she looked up at him and said "The stars and the moon are so beautiful. Would you give them to me?" "No", the man replied, "for they are not mine to give." Then the woman looked out onto the ocean and asked the man if he would swim the deepest sea to be with her. He looked at her solemly and just shook his head for he couldn't swim. They began to kiss some more and the woman asked him if he would buy her fancy things to make her happy. Again the man replied no, for he didn't have a lot of money.
After all this the woman asked him out of exasperation, "Just what is it that you would give to me then?" The man looked into her eyes and with complete sincerity he replied "I would give you love. Each day I would remind you how much you mean to me. I would tell you how much I care for you. You will never have to question my feelings for you. I will promise to take care of you the best that I possibly can. I will share my life with you and be there when you are happy as well as when you are sad. I will be by your side through the good times and the bad times as well as the sick and the healthy ones. I will love you like no other man has done before and I will tell you each and every day that you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can't promise you riches but I can promise that you will be rich with love. That is what I can give you. I give you me, that is my gift to you."
The woman listened to his words and when she looked into his eyes she saw that those words weren't just words. They were spoken from the heart, not just said but honestly spoken to her. She saw that he was real and that his love for her was so special that she couldn't even describe it. It was then that she realized that she didn't need the moon, or the stars, or even fancy things. They were just material things that, although very nice, didn't count for much in comparison to having true love. She had the greatest gift of all - she had this wonderful and thoughtful man in her life. She had someone who truly cared for her and accepted her for just being herself. She decided that this gift wouldn't be returned, she was keeping it. It fit just right around her heart and it looked so good on her that she glowed with pride from it. Most of all, she really loved it. It was special and it's value could never be measured. |
