"So long as there shall exist, by reason of law and custom, a social condemnation, which, in the face of civilisation, artificially creates hells on earth, and complicates a destiny that is divine, with human fatality; so long as the three problems of the age — the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of woman by starvation, and the dwarfing of childhood by physical and spiritual night — are not solved; so long as, in certain regions, social asphyxia shall be possible; in other words, and from a yet more extended point of view, so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this cannot be useless."
--Les Misérables (Preface)

"Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated."
--Martin Luther King
Chapter 2

A.) What is the one key idea of this chapter?
We are called to make a difference. We are asked not to give into the easy answer just because everyone else is doing it, but to think about the other option and consider going against society if it is what you believe in. In today's world, I see the issue of life an important discision, because it is easy to just go with society and not worry about someone elses right to life, who has little or no choice to survive. It's easy to sacrifice yourself for a son or daughter, but when it comes to a complete stranger, we are called to make a difference.

B.) Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
-"Judaism was the only religion that was monotheistic." Throughout the centuries, there have been various cults and philosophies. Only one religion thrived such as Judaism, on the belief of one God. Many followed these cults because of the answers they believed they would find and the hope that these cults had to offer.
-"The Jewish people living in Galilee adopted some of the customs of the neighbors." Hardships of the Jewish faith is shown especilly during the time of Herod. Without Judaism and their monotheistic principles, Christianity would not be where it is today. Christianity has many roots: The Roman Empire, the language and philosophy of the Greek Culture, the Jewish Religion, and also Non-Christian Religions.

C.) One image that captures the chapter for you.

D.) One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal. Just write out the question. Try to answer it if you want.
What is the importance of Jesus' mission?
-to preach the good news to the poor.
-to help people be free to live as God intends.
-to perform acts of mercy.
-to work towards social justices.
-to celebrate and proclaim the arrival of deliverance.

E.) Express a value of society that Christians are challenged to reject.
As Christians, we are asked to protect life in every form, even the most innocent of all life. Pro-Life indicates opposition to practices such as euthanasia, human cloning, research involving human embryonic stem cells, and the death penalty, but most commonly to abortion, and support for fetal rights. As Christians, we are challenged to make a difference and reject an unfair death when the victim is powerless and has no rights left. God wants us to protect life, not destroy it.
