GERBIL DIET

Our gerbils drink only Poland Spring water from their water bottle.  They each get two 8 in1 Multivite vitamin supplement daily crunch treats each day. They are fed a variety of foods- all organic. They get a variety of whole, uncooked grains: hard wheat, oats, triticale, amarath, quinoa, and flax seeds. We also give them a few pieces of California Natural hard dog food (!), for the protein, which they also sometimes enjoy. This is supplemented with pieces of raw dandelion greens and raw kale, as well as (varying from day to day) cooked green soy beans, extra firm tofu, all types of cooked beans, and small amounts of the following cooked vegetables: broccoli and cauliflower, brussel sprouts, sweet potato, cooked (never raw) brown rice; cooked zucchini squash, string beans, carrot, Yukon Gold potato mashed with chopped spinach and  first cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil; raw water cress and arugula, and Haas avocado (very small amounts).

For treats, they get small amounts or raw nuts: almonds, black walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, and pistachio, and pumpkin seeds. Rare treats are cooked spelt pasta, and also bits of raw organic strawberry, cherry, apple, peach, blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry. In other words, they share our food (except, obviously, we don’t eat dog food or raw grains, and we also eat cooked fish). They come out for their food –they like to be hand fed- every twelve hours, and sometimes “beg” (standing on hind legs, paws up, mouths moving) when they see us eating (which we sometimes give into, and sometimes laugh and try to ignore- LOL!)
