The Human Jesus | ||||||||||||||

Before you read any further, I should clarify a couple things about Jesus Christ. First of all, forget about all the teachings that church authorities and teachers put into your head about Jesus being the Son of God and Savior of the world. Despite all of those, Jesus was just as much a human as you and I and this webpage will explore this idea more. What does it mean to be human? Human beings are made up of mind, body, and soul. We have the ability to reason and feel that sets us apart from animals. Human beings are susceptable to emotions and do everything in their lives with the ultimate goal of happiness in mind. But what does Jesus know about all these things, I mean after all, He only came to earth to talk people's ears off with warnings of the endtimes and the message of God's love, right? WRONG! Jesus clearly had a body like a human because he went through excrutiating pain in the crucifixtion. He also has a mind because he reasoned out his plans on which villages to preach to and what to tell them. He also had a soul because he offered it up to God before he died. Jesus pursued happiness in his life as well. He loved hanging out with his friends and partying with loved ones. He put himself in the midst of those he loved and therefore enjoyed himself whenever he was with them. Jesus had views about things that were right which he followed and received happiness from them knowing that he did what was right, such as obeying his parents. Jesus was also very much in touch with his emotions. It hurt him to see all the poor and sick suffering around him. Out of his sympathy and love for them, he cured them and helped them in any way he could. In contrast to love and happiness, Jesus also got angry just like every one of us has. When he saw the Temple being used for the buying and selling of merchandise, he became infuriated and wrecked the displays of the merchants. However, Jesus' anger was justified and he did not let it rule him. In addition to being angry, Jesus was sad at times and even cried. When people that were close to him died, he weeped for them because he missed them dearly, just like we cry at the funeral of a loved one. The devil knew that Jesus, being a human, was vulernable to human wants and desires. It is for this reason that the devil chose the three methods of temptations that he did. Naturally, Jesus was hungry at times. This is why the devil tempted him with bread. The devil also knew that humans can be greedy and desire great power and wealth. The devil presented the greatest source of power and wealth, rule over the world, to Jesus in exchange for worship. This had to have been an extremely hard notion for Jesus to resist. Nevertheless, after reasoning through it, He decided that God was more important than earthly wealth and power. People loved being around Jesus and He loved being around them. He was very charismatic and people were attracted to Him and what He had to say. In his teachings, He emphasizes having good relationships with everyone and loving everyone, rather than preaching about repentence and scaring people into conversion. In order to better our faith, we should look to Jesus as a role model. God loved us so much that He wanted to share His love and gifts with the world and in order to do that to the best extent possible He sent His Son down to earth in the form of a human so that the entire human race could relate to Him and understand Him. Since Jesus was a human like us, we can look at his life and find parallels to our own. We can observe His actions and responses to certain situations and use them as a guide to our own lives and how to live as we should. |
