Computer Graphics - Photoshop Elements

I've always had a love of painting, drawing and art - I even had a moderate amount of talent at school and beyond. When I got a computer, this interest also extended to computer art and graphics, but the lack of a serious graphics program, such as Photoshop, put a dent in my creativity.

Using the free graphics program that came with my first scanner, and a Wacom graphics tablet, I was able to create some clipart that was displayed on the About Horses website that I used to run. One of my pieces, Noble Eye was even used as a Flash screen on a CD for an equine management program.

That first freebie program was okay to start with, but it whet my appetite for more creative work. I would have loved to get Photoshop or Painter, but my budget wouldn't stretch that far. However, one day, I found Photoshop Elements 2 (PE2) in Walmart, and discovered that (a) it would work with my Macintosh and (b) it was $60 as opposed to the usual $600 price tag of the full version of Photoshop. I didn't hesitate - I grabbed it there and then. I didn't get around to installing and using it for a couple of months, after a computer upgrade gave me more harddrive space to store my creations.

Once I got it installed, I started playing around with it. I was quickly impressed with the power of this inexpensive program. From what I could see, it did everything I wanted from a graphics program. I also found some excellent online tutorials to help me learn my way around faster.

I decided to make a separate area to display my Photoshop Elements 2 creations. I'll add new pictures as I create them.
  • Red Ball - this is one of the first graphics I made, using the tutorials at myjanee.com
  • Pearly Button - made from a myjanee.com tutorial
  • Shapes - more shapes, from a tutorial at myjanee.com
  • Thatched Cottage - now we're getting fancy. This is a photograph that I turned into a piece of artwork following a tutorial at myjanee.com. This is a large file, but smaller files didn't do it justice. This was the first thing that I did that I really thought - WOW!
  • Amazing Gradients - it's amazing what you can do with the gradients tool, as I learned in this tutorial
  • Filled Letters - this was fun to do. The letters are filled with images - very clever.
  • Silver Orb - this is my first attempt at something "surreal" - a silver orb floating over the ocean. I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out for a first try.
  • Reflecting Orb - I got a little more adventurous with this, which is basically another version of the above orb. This one reflects the sea underneath it. I am very pleased with this one, I learned a lot by just playing around with different effects and filters and seeing what I liked.
  • Rose Bubbles - Here's a little more experimentation with bubbles. I like the effect, but unfortunately, the idea wasn't original. Several other members of the MyJanee. com forums have done something similar.
  • Cloud Horse - this is an original idea and I'm pleased with the way it came out. I wanted a horse made of waves, or clouds and eventually found the perfect cloud photograph to work with. It uses the liquify filter to manipulate the clouds into a horse shape. Unfortunately, it's somewhat limited by my artistic skills (or lack thereof)
  • Dark Horse - this is pure Photoshop Elements. I used the original Cloud Horse and played with filters and blending styles till I came up with something different.
  • Christmas Card - I'm particularly proud of this image. I created it completely from scratch in Photoshop Elements, painting each leaf and each berry on it's own layer. I entered in the MyJanee.com Christmas challenge and won a prize with it - so now I can say I'm an "award winning artist" :)
  • Haunted House - this image was created by manipulating a photograph and then adding various elements with brushes in Photoshop Elements. I really had fun with this one, even if it didn't win any awards :)
I've done a lot of additional work in Photoshop Elements, including graphics for the various online groups I belong to, such as WOSIB and Friend 2 Friend. For a while, I also made graphic quilt squares, but eventually had to leave that group since it became too time-consuming.
