Cucumis metuliferus: The kiwano melon is also known as the African Horned Melon, African Horned Cucumber and the Jelly Melon.

The melon fruit is shaped like the lemon, but orange in color. It has a stubby horn or pikey textured skin. Inside, the horned cucumber has a yellow-green flesh with a jelly-like texture. When consumed, is reflects the taste of a tart cumcumber and lime flavor.

The fruit is native to southern and central Africa, and was introduced to Australia and New Zealand in the early 20th century.




Planting: Similar to watermelons, this vine plant should only be grown during the warm seasons due to it's sensitivity to cold.Hot and dry conditions are best in order to prevent mildew to the plant.

Maturity: When shopping for the melon kiwanos, look for those showing no bruises or spots and with a bright orange color. If the horns look damaged, refrain from buying. (It may indicate rough handling.) Kiwano melons are available year round in specialty supermarkets!

Areas of Harvest:Most imported melons are from New Zealand. California has began growing this melon due to it's commonclimatic temperatures. Therefore,the domestic product is available part of the year.

Nutritional Factors: These unusual fruits are low in calories- 24 calories, high in Vitamin C and contain more potassium than a banana!
