The Prince

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

You looked in from the ocean

I looked out from the shore

Curious and Captive

I knocked upon your door

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Fred stood on the doorstep, his hand held just above the doorbell, deciding whether or not to push. Fortunately he was spared the decision as the door opened at that moment. Angelina Johnson’s dark face appeared, shocked.

“Fred!”

“Hi Angelina.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

You stood aside

You let me in

Your house was warm and dry

You gave me things I did not need

These things I’ll leave behind
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

He sat on the clean sofa. She stared at him, shock registering all over her face.

“How are you?” He asked, nervously.

“I’m good. Great. You?”

“Been better. Been worse, too. Normally when Snape caught George and I in his private potions cupboard.”

“Why are you here?”

That, he hadn’t been expecting.

“To see you.”

“But why? You ran away, in the middle of the night. Only a note, explaining.”

“I went with Harry, Ron, and George. We had to go.”

“To fight you-know-who. I know. That’s what the note said.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Save a Prince for her

Save a tear for me

And let her Prince be everything

That I could never be

Save a Prince for her

A Prince for her

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“You just left! You left me there!” she suddenly screamed. Fred stood up and she started to hit his chest.

“Angelina!”

“Why did you do it? We were supposed to… We were going to…”

“Get married. I know.” Fred finished. Angelina was sobbing. He looked down at her.

“I’m sorry, Angel. I had to go.”

“And you couldn’t have told me?”

“I-I…” But he was interrupted by the front door opening.

“Angelina, I’m home!” Roger Davies stood in the doorway. He stared around, then his eyes narrowed.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

If you survive your perfection

I’ll hold on to mine

I’ll be faithful to our beauty

The healing comes in time

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“Fred Weasley.” He muttered. Fred stared at him, then looked at Angelina. She smiled at Roger.

“Roger, can we have a moment alone, please?”

“Of course. I’ll be in the kitchen.” He threw Fred a last suspicious glance before leaving. Fred turned to Angelina.

“You’re married?”

“Yes.”

“To… him?”

“To Roger. He took care of me after you left. Helped me when I needed someone. When I needed you.”

“Angelina-”

“I was pregnant when you left.” She said quietly.

“What?”

“I had a miscarriage. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. Roger was strong when I needed him to be. He’s everything to me. It was a girl, by the way. We called Carrie.” Angelina spoke in a brisk tone, but her dark eyes sparkled with tears.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Hold me like a mountain

Hold me like dust

The things I want are out of reach

But reach for them I must

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“I’m… so sorry.”

“I know you are.” Angelina whispered. Fred stood up and said,

“I should go.”

“I think that’s for the best. How are the others?”

“They’re ok. Harry and Ron are looking for Hermione at the moment.”

“She’s upstairs.”

“Upstairs?”

“Yes. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who was abandoned. They left her too. So she moved in with me and Roger.” Angelina went to the bottom of the stairs and called,

“Hermione!”

Hermione Granger’s bushy-haired head came into view.

“What is it?”

“Fred will explain.” She said. She turned to Fred and said, “Goodbye.” Before walking into the kitchen. Fred told Hermione what was happening. Her eyes lit up and she grabbed his arm.

“Where are they?”

“Leaky Cauldron.”

“Well, let’s go!”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Save a Prince for her

Save a tear for me

And let her Prince be everything

That I could never be

Save a Prince for her

A Prince for her

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Fred sat next to George as Hermione flung herself at Ron and Harry, crying and laughing, hugging and hitting. George looked at his twin.

“How’d it go? Was she happy to see you?”

“That’s not the way I would put it. She’s married. To Roger Davies.”

“What? No way!” George looked shocked. But Fred was deep in thought.

How could he have done it? How could he have just gone? If he’d stayed… he would have known he was going to have a baby. Maybe she’d have been ok. He’d have a daughter.

So many things had gone… just because he’d left.

George sighed and looked at his brother.

“Cheer up. At least we beat him. You-know-who is gone forever.” Harry, Ron and Hermione sat down, all smiling. Hermione looked at Fred.

“I’m sorry, Fred. I know how much you loved her.”

“It was my fault. I couldn’t just have expected her to wait.”

You looked in from the ocean

While I looked out from the shore

Curious and Captive

I knocked upon your door

(Four years later)

Fred and George walked along the streets of London, watching the muggles pass by. They were so weird! George was just pointing out a strange, stripy sort of pattern (Zebra crossing) when Fred looked up. And saw Angelina Davies.

She was walking with Roger, holding hands. She was wearing simple, light clothes. And she was holding a small child. The child laughed and tugged at Angelina’s long locks. George saw what he was looking at and said,

“Go and say hi.”

“No. She’s got a new life now. I’m not part of it.”

“You can still say hi.” Fred didn’t need to. Because Angelina had caught sight of him. She stopped and stared at him. Fred looked away. As the three of them walked towards the twins George waved.

“Hey!”

“Hi George.” Angelina said. Fred looked away. She held up the small boy.

“This is our son. He’s called William.” William was staring at George and grinned. George stuck out his tongue.

You stood aside

You let me in

Your house was warm and dry

You gave me things I did not need

These things I’ll leave behind

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Roger took William and turned to George.

“Have you seen that stripy thing?” They moved away. Angelina and Fred looked at each other. She made the first move.

“How are you?”

“Good. George and I share a place. Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes are selling well.”

“I hear Ron and Hermione are getting married.

“Yeah. ‘Bout bloody time really.”

“Yes. Look, Fred, we can still be friends, can’t we?”

“Yeah, ‘course. How are you?”

“I’m great. I’m pregnant again.” she touched her stomach gently. Fred looked away. George and Roger returned. William was talking but no one was really listening. Fred said,

“We’d better get going.”

“Owl me sometime.” Angelina said as he walked away.

Save a Prince for her

Save a tear for me

And let her Prince be everything

That I could never be

Save a Prince for her

George looked at his twin as if he were mad.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing.”

“That was Angelina Johnson! The love of your life! And you barely said two words to her!”

“Wrong. She’s Angelina Davies now. With a family. George, I can’t be friends with her. God, I still love her! But I can never have her.”

Fred turned away. George put a hand on his brother’s shoulder.

“Don’t worry about it. OK? You’ll be fine without her.”

“I won’t. Come on. Let’s go.”

Fred didn’t care where he went right then. He wasn’t thinking, looking or listening.

Which is why he never saw the car. Never saw it until it hit him. Didn’t hear it until it hit him.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Save a tear for me

And let that Prince be everything

That I could never be

Save a Prince for her

A Prince for her

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

(A month later.)

George stared over the crowd. How could this have come to happen? He cleared his throat.

“Fred was the best friend I ever had. And now he’s gone, I don’t know what to do. He would have loved this, he’d be laughing about it. Because he loved the attention, I guess. All I can really say is how much I’ll miss him. We’ll all miss him. He was someone who could cheer you up by just being in the same room as you. Just by saying a sentence he could bring a smile to your face.

But he could be serious too. He only ever loved one girl his entire life. He wanted to be her prince, but when he couldn’t he knew it. He let her go, and didn’t try to win her back. I think that was the one thing he regretted out of anything he’d ever done.

I knew him better than anyone in the whole world. He was half of me, and now he’s gone it feels like I’ve been cut in half. So I’m going to finish by saying he did what he loved best. He liked to make people laugh, and he achieved it.”

An incredibly inadequate speech. But George didn’t care. The crowd was starting to leave, heading away to their lives. But George stayed.

He watched his brother being lowed into the ground. Watched the ground being poured over the wooden box. Night fell and George just stood, staring down at the fresh earth. He was all alone.

“George?” He didn’t turn as Angelina stood beside him. She looked down and swallowed.

“I’m sorry I missed the funeral.”

“It’s OK.”

“I… oh, god. George, he’s really gone.”

“I know.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Save a prince…

Save a prince for her

Save a prince…
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

“He loved you, right up to the end.”

“He did?”

“His whole life. All the time we were away, every single night he’d say ‘I’m going to go back. I’m going to go back and find her. I’m going to say I’m sorry and do everything I can to prove it.’”

Angelina stifled a sob. George finally looked at her.

“Did you love him?”

“Always. But… I had Roger, and my family.”

“It was over quickly. He died straight away.”

“I was just down the road. If I’d had known I would have gone back.”

“It wouldn’t have made a difference.”

George put his arms around Angelina and hugged her tightly. She sobbed into his shoulder. Her tears jerked him and soon he was crying too. Her cries rang into the still night air. It rang through the trees and animals pricked their ears at the sound of the pain.

As the tears died away she looked up at him.

“Do you want a lift home?”

“OK.” Angelina looked down at the grave and laid the wreath of flowers there. They both looked at the headstone a moment longer, then they walked slowly to Angelina’s car.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Save a prince…

Save a prince for her

Save a prince…

Save a prince for her

Save a prince…

Save a tear for me
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

That’s the end! I’m practically crying and I wrote it for god’s sake! I hope you enjoyed it, or maybe it moved you.

Lotsa luv and huggles

Katie.
