A Mini-Fanfic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lila is sitting in the rose garden by herself and tending to her roses when Jax appears, carrying a rose in one hand.
"Lila, hi. You're just the person I want to see."
"Jax, what a lovely surprise! Come, sit down." Jax kisses Lila on the hand and gives her the rose.
"Oh, thank you, dear, but shouldn't this rose be for someone else?"
Jax laughs. "No, it's for you, Lila. I have a huge favor to ask of you. I was hoping you could help me out."
Lila smiles. "Let me guess, this has something to do with a very pretty young woman."
Jax blushes. "Yes."
"Well, in that case, I'll help in any way I can. I'll do anything in the name of true love."
"I knew you would say that."
"What is it that you want me to do?" Lila asks.
"Well, I'm going to surprise Chloe with a candlelight dinner in the gazebo tonight. It's where we first met. Do you think she will like it?"
"Oh, of course! She'll love it! Especially when you give her whatever it is that you are hiding in your pocket."
Jax looks stunned. "Nothing gets by you, does it, Lila?" Jax reaches into his pocket as Lila looks on expectantly. He takes out a little black box from his pocket and opens it, showing Lila the beautiful diamond ring. "Lila, I'm going to ask Chloe to marry me tonight."
"Jax, that is wonderful news! I'm so happy for the two of you!"
"Thanks, Lila. Now, here's where you come in. I need you to do two things for me. First, I need you to call Chloe and ask her to come over. Tell her that you would really like to see her. When she gets here, tell her that there is a surprise waiting for her in the living room. But don't tell her that I was here. As far as she knows, I'm at a business meeting. Can you do that?"
"Of course, dear. But wait, weren't there two things you wanted me to do?"
"Oh yeah. The second thing may be a little harder. Could you keep Edward out of the way?"
Lila laughs. "Don't worry, you have my guarantee that Edward will not interfere with your plans."
"Thanks, Lila. Well, I have to go talk to Cook. I'll let you know when to call Chloe."
"Jax."
"Yes?"
"Congratulations, my dear. You and Chloe make a lovely couple. I wish you both the best."
"That means a lot to me, Lila. You know, I think you are the only Quartermaine who knows the true meaning of love."
Chloe enters the Q mansion. Just as she sets her purse down on the table, Lila enters.
"Chloe, dear, how nice to see you."
"Lila, how are you?" Chloe kisses Lila on the cheek.
"I'm doing just fine, although, I'm afraid I owe you an apology."
"For what?"
"Well, I wanted to have a nice chat with you, but I'm afraid I'm a little too tired now. I'm sorry to put you through all the trouble."
"Oh, Lila, it's no trouble at all! You go on ahead and rest. I'll come by tomorrow and we can talk."
"All right. But before you go, I think there is something waiting for you in the living room. Goodnight, dear."
"Goodnight, Lila."
Chloe is a little confused at what could possibly be waiting for her in the living room. She walks into the room. Immediately, she sees a vase full of red roses sitting on the table. Next to the table, she sees her favorite light blue dress draped over a chair. Beside the flowers was a note, which Chloe picks up and reads.
Chloe,
Meet me in the gazebo, and wear your blue dress. (shoes optional)
Love,
Jax
A huge grin appears on Chloe's face. "Oh, Jax, what sort of romantic thing are you up to now?
Chloe steps out onto the patio. She is wearing her blue dress, her hair is pinned up, and she is barefoot. As she starts to head toward the gazebo, a familiar hand wraps around her waist and a white rose is held in front of her.
Jax hands Chloe the rose and while still standing behind her, whispers in her ear, "Close your eyes."
Chloe does so and laughs. "Jax, what are you up to?"
"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise. Now close your eyes and come with me."
"Okay."
"No peeking now, or you won't get your surprise."
"Jax, you realize you're spoiling me, don't you?"
"I love to spoil you. Just keep your eyes closed and be careful. We're coming up to the steps now." They both stand in the gazebo. "Okay, open your eyes."
Chloe opens her eyes and sees before her a beautiful candlelight dinner. She then looks at Jax, finally seeing him. He is dressed in a tuxedo. "Jax, this is-WOW! It's beautiful. I love it!" Chloe kisses Jax on the lips. When they finally break away, Chloe gives Jax a suspicious look. "Lila was in on this, wasn't she?"
Jax shrugs his shoulders and acts as if he does not know what she is talking about.
"She was!" Chloe says.
"Okay, okay, you found me out. I got Lila to get you over here."
"I thought it was strange when Lila asked me to come over so late."
Jax takes Chloe's hands. "Chloe, you look so beautiful."
Chloe smiles. "You don't look so bad yourself." They kiss again.
"Okay, sit down." Jax pulls the chair out for Chloe, as any gentleman would do.
"Thank you." Chloe says.
Jax pours Chloe a glass of champagne. "Here you are. Tonight, we are celebrating."
"Celebrating what?!" Chloe says excitedly.
"Us. And, our anniversary."
"What?"
"It was exactly one year ago that you came running through the pouring rain to this gazebo, with a broken shoe, in an attempt to escape those crazy Quartermaines."
"Jax," Chloe says softly, "you remembered the date."
"It was the day that changed my life. I saw you, and I thought, who is this beautiful woman who just stumbled into my life?" Jax sits down and raises his glass. "To us."
"To us." Chloe repeats. They clink their glasses together and reach across the table for another kiss.
Chloe looks at the food set before her. "This looks like Cook's handy work."
"Well, most of it is."
"Most of it? Jasper Jacks, are you telling me that there is something on this table that you actually prepared yourself?"
Jax laughs. "Me, prepare? I don't think so. But I did have this delivered today." Jax hands Chloe a box with a ribbon on it.
"This packaging looks very familiar. Is this, (she removes the lid) it is! Jax, you got me chocolate truffles..."
"All the way from Groomio's." Jax completes her sentence.
"Jax, do you know how badly I've been craving this?"
"Hey, what's a meal without your favorite food?'
"You know me so well."
"Shall we start eating?" Jax suggests.
"Yes! I'm starved!" Chloe starts to make those eating noises she always makes.
"Good?" Jax asks.
With a full mouth, Chloe simply replies, "Mmm-hmm."
"I'll take that as a yes."
"Jax, thank you for all of this. This is truly wonderful. We're going to have to have dinner in the gazebo more often."
"I think that can be arranged."
"I love you, Jax"
"I love you, too, Chloe. Now, to the entertainment portion of this evening."
"What? You mean this wasn't?"
"Well, there's more." Jax reaches under the table and pulls out a portable CD player. Chloe looks on in amazement. Jax sets it on the table and pushes play. The song, "Lost In You," begins to play. "May I have this dance?"
"You don't have to ask me twice!" Chloe says.
The two dance, staring at each other the whole time with looks of love in their eyes. When the song ends, they are still in each other's arms.
Suddenly, they hear a crash of thunder and see a flicker of lightening. Rain begins pelting the roof of the gazebo. Jax and Chloe laugh.
"Did you plan that, too?" Chloe asks.
"As much as I would like to take credit for it, no. It's just a happy coincidence."
"Jax, with me wearing my blue dress and you in your tuxedo, and the rain and us dancing, it's just like the night we first met."
"Good. That was what I was going for."
"There is, however, one small difference."
"What's that?" Jax asks.
Chloe smiles and looks down. "No shoes!"
Jax laughs and holds her close to him. They dance together to the sound of the rain and thunder.
After the two had been dancing for quite a while, Jax pulls away and takes Chloe's hands. "Chloe, there's something I want to tell you. A year ago, jumping into a new relationship was probably the last thing on my mind. I had spent months just feeling sorry for myself. I didn't want to live. And when I finally got over that, I never thought that I would find someone to love again. And then, there you were, standing over there in your soaking blue dress and your broken shoe." Chloe laughs. "Chloe, you were like this breath of fresh air. You came and just magically lit up all of the dark places inside of me. Chloe, you saved me by helping me move on with my life. " Chloe smiles. "You are the sweetest, kindest, and definitely the most beautiful person I have ever met. That first night I saw you, I honestly thought my eyes were deceiving me, because how was it possible that an angel from heaven was standing right before me?"
Chloe blushes. "Oh, Jax-"
"I guess what I am trying to say is that I can't imagine my life without you in it."
Jax then gets down on one knee. Chloe, open-mouthed, holds her breath. Jax takes the box with the ring inside out of his pocket. He opens the box and holds the ring up to Chloe.
"Chloe Greer Morgan, will you marry me? Will you be my wife?"
Jax waits for what seems like the longest moment. Chloe's look of shock turns to one of complete bliss and happiness. She starts to cry and a tear trickles down her cheek. She can't speak, so she nods her head up and down.
"Yes?" Jax asks.
Chloe nods again and manages to speak this time. "Yes! Yes, Jax, I will marry you! I'll be your wife!" Jax stands up and Chloe throws her arms around him, still sobbing tears of joy. They break away from the embrace and Jax places the ring on Chloe's delicate finger. He then wipes away a stray tear on Chloe's face with his finger. Chloe smiles and Jax holds her face in his hands, pulling her in closer, and then kissing her. After the kiss, they hold each other. They begin to move back and forth as they start to dance. The rain begins to come down in torrents and the thunder rumbles in the distance with a flash of lightening following.
Chloe, with her arms around Jax, holds out her hand and gazes at the diamond ring on her finger. She thinks to herself, "I did it, Uncle Herbert. I finally found my true love."
