Chapter Four
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun spilled into the hotel room from the open balcony door the next morning. Sounds of Rome drifted to their room from the street below. Jax slowly opened his eyes and smiled when he felt the warmness of Chloe beside him. Jax watched Chloe as she slept. She looked more peaceful than he had ever seen her at that moment.
And it was in that moment that it really hit him. Life was going by, and he didn't want to miss another single moment with Chloe. They had already lost a month with each other. He already knew in his heart that he wanted to share the rest of his life with this beautiful angel.
Jax quietly got out of bed and got dressed. He suddenly knew what he had to do.
When Jax got back to the hotel, he saw that Chloe was still asleep, which was perfect. He didn't want to have to explain himself. He put his hand over the box in his pocket and smiled.
Just then, Chloe begin to stir and moan in her sleep. Jax rushed over to her side. He sat beside her and watched her, wondering if he should wake her up if she was having a bad dream. But he didn't have to do that. Chloe slowly woke up herself.
She looked at Jax for a few moments and then smiled. Jax smiled back.
"Hey," Jax said. "You weren't having a bad dream, were you?"
Chloe smiled and shook her had. "No. I dreamed that I was trapped on this island with this evil man who was keeping me prisoner, and then my dashing prince charming came to my rescue and took me to Rome, the most romantic city in the world."
"It was no dream, babe," Jax whispered and leaned forward to kiss her lips.
Chloe had been more tired then she thought, so Jax insisted, against Chloe's wishes, that they held off Trevi Fountain for the evening so that Chloe could get some rest.
"I just don't want you to overdue it, sweetie," Jax had said.
"All right, if you say so," Chloe agreed.
But finally, evening had approached, and Jax took Chloe's hand and led her out of the room.
When they stepped outside, Chloe spun around. "I am never, ever, going to take my freedom for granted again! I am so incredibly happy!"
"You're not the only one," Jax said, gathering her in his arms and kissing her. Then he took hold of her hand again. "Come on, let's go."
Jax and Chloe walked hand-in-hand to Trevi Fountain. It was beautiful at night. The stars were out. The moonlight and streetlights were reflecting off the fountain's water. They gazed at it for a while in silence.
"You know what, Jax?" Chloe finally said.
"What?"
"You were right."
"About what?"
"About us coming back here. You said that whoever throws a coin into Trevi will return to the city, and here we are." Chloe smiled at him. "This fountain really is magic."
"Oh yeah, it's magic alright. But I don't think it's the fountain. This right here is the real magic." Jax took her hands and kissed each one, making Chloe blush. "So, you ready to make a wish?"
"Oh, I don't think I have anything else to wish for. My wish already came true. In a few days, we will be back in Port Charles, I'll complete my radiation treatment, and more importantly, we will be able to start our lives together."
"Not just yet," Jax said softly.
Chloe looked at him questioningly. "What do you mean?"
Jax smiled. "I mean, shouldn't we make it official first?" With that, Jax suddenly got down on one knee. He took the box out of his pocket and opened it, revealing the diamond and sapphire ring inside.
Chloe gasped. Her heart was beating so fast and she knew that tears would be spilling from her eyes any moment now.
"Chloe, we've been through so much together this past year, from Gertrude and your accident to Helena and Stefan. And, Chloe, we've made it. Nothing could manage to tear us apart, our love is too strong. And I don't want to wait another moment for us to spend our lives together. So what I'm asking is, Chloe, will you marry me?"
Chloe choked on her tears. She couldn't get out the word, so she shook her head.
"Yes?" Jax asked.
Chloe shook her head again.
Jax smiled big and took the ring out of the box. He placed it on her delicate finger. Then he got to his feet and they embraced.
"I love you, Jax," Chloe finally said.
Jax held her face in his hands. "I love you, too, and we're going to be together for the rest of our lives." Jax leaned forward and placed a tender kiss on her lips.
The wedding was a small ceremony with family and friends. They got married in front of Trevi Fountain.
Neither of them could help but smile as they said their vows and the priest announced them husband and wife-finally.
"You may kiss the bride," the priest said.
Jax slowly lifted Chloe's veil and looked into her angel eyes.
As they kissed, everyone began to cheer and applaud for them.
Jax then pulled Chloe in for an embrace. "Could this moment be any more perfect?" he whispered into her ear.
"Yeah," Chloe whispered back. "I'm pregnant, Jax."
Jax looked into her eyes, wondering if he had heard her right. Chloe just smiled, and Jax kissed her again. He took her hand, and everyone was still cheering and congratulating them on their beautiful wedding. They smiled as they walked off to begin their lives together.
