The Sailor Scouts consider Tuxedo Kamen to be a guardian; someone who assists them in their time of greatest need with a single rose, thrown in battle, to announce his presence.
During the Silver Millennium, he was the prince of the Earth, Prince Endymion. He was engaged to Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, but he and Serenity, not to mention everyone else, was killed during the war with Queen Beryl.
Mamoru's parents were killed in a car accident while he was very young and he ended up in an orphanage with most of his memory gone. He had no idea who he really was, nor did he know that he was Tuxedo Kamen. His memory finally did return when he was attacked by Zoisite and Sailor Moon remembered that she was the Moon Princess. However, Mamoru was captured by Queen Beryl and had been subsequently brainwashed. His loyalty was then converted to the side of the Dark Kingdom… or, so everyone thought. When Sailor Moon fought against Queen Beryl, she finally managed to get him to remember everything that Beryl tried to suppress, finally freeing him. After that battle, Mamoru once again lost all his memories as Tuxedo Kamen and Prince Endymion.
When Ail and Alan arrived on Earth, a second guardian, known as the Moonlight Knight, temporarily took his place. The Moonlight Knight was created from Mamoru’s will to protect Usagi, which was too strong to seal away when everyone’s memories were sealed after their rebirths. Once Mamoru had recovered his memory, the Moonlight Knight returned into him, making him complete once again.
When Chibiusa arrived, Mamoru started having dreams warning him away from Usagi, telling him that she would die if he stayed too close to her. He started acting cold towards her, hoping that it would save her life, even though it hurt both her and himself. As everyone started growing more concerned over Usagi, Ryoku took it into his own hands to find out why Mamoru was acting this way. After a long and slightly forceful talk, he managed to convince Mamoru that what he was doing was more harmful than helpful and that if he truly loved her, he would protect her from whatever harm might befall her, rather than avoiding her just to spare her that harm in the first place. When Mamoru told Usagi about the dreams that he had been having, Usagi was more than happy to discover that it wasn’t her fault that Mamoru was acting so cold to her. She told him that she didn’t care what happened to her, as long as she could remain with him.
Tuxedo Kamen’s items:
He has dozens upon dozens of red roses, which he uses for offensive and defensive attacks, or just to announce his presence during battle. These roses are magical in nature with the cut end being razor sharp. The rigidness of the flower makes it strong enough to be used as a throwing dagger.
He has a cane which he uses as both a blade and a staff. The cane can also be extended when needed.
