Epilogue

The next day, after school, everyone gathered in Shiba Park at the spot where Chibiusa first arrived in the present. Usagi, Mamoru, and Ryoku stood by and watched as the others said their goodbyes.

“Everyone, thank you,” Chibiusa said as she held her Luna Sphere in her arms.

“Chibiusa-chan, it’s time to say goodbye, isn’t it?” Rei said sadly.

“Tell my fortune for me sometime,” she replied with a smile.

“Always be cheerful, okay?” Ami said.

“Let’s study again sometime.”

“Say hello to all the future Sailor Soldiers,” Makoto requested.

“Thanks for all the delicious lunches.”

“Don’t wet your bed!” Minako joked with a smile.

Chibiusa turned serious. “Of course I won’t.” Her smile returned. “Let’s play together again sometime.”

“Kiddo.”

The girls moved away and turned to see Ryoku walk partway over to them.

“Ryo-ojichan.”

Ryoku grimaced. “Uncle? You’re making me sound like an old man.”

The girls laughed. “That sounds about right, don’t you think?” Minako asked with a wink. “After all, he is the oldest of us, right?”

“Oh, shut up.”

“That’s okay,” Chibiusa said with a laugh. “I prefer Ryo-oniichan, anyway.”

Ryoku nodded and half-smiled. “Anyway, I want you to take this with you.” He reached behind his back and brought out her wooden flute. “Here.” He tossed the flute over to her, which she easily caught after putting down her Luna Sphere.

“Ryo-oniichan, thank you!” she said as she played a note on the flute.

“Much better,” he said, nodding with satisfaction. “Keep practicing, kiddo, and soon you’ll be playing that flute as well as I play my guitar… maybe.”

Chibiusa walked up to him and hugged him. “I’m really going to miss you.”

“Yeah, me, too, kiddo.” He stood up and moved to stand with the others.

Chibiusa and Usagi merely stared at each other, neither one moving. Mamoru lightly nudged Usagi with his shoulder. “Well, Usako?” She nodded and walked forward toward Chibiusa. The two tried to say something, but they couldn’t seem to find the right words to say. So many emotions, so little words.

“Usagi, you won’t see her for a long time,” Rei said. “It’s time to say goodbye.”

“Out with it, you two,” Ryoku urged.

“Usako….”

Usagi knelt down and embraced Chibiusa, holding her tightly and expressing everything that she needed to say in that one hug.

Chibiusa moved back and smiled lovingly up at her. “Thank you… Mama.”

“Chibiusa….”

She turned away and walked a few meters away, toward the lake, then turned back toward the others again as she brought out her Time Key. “Everyone, thank you.” A bright light lit up around Chibiusa and faded away, taking her with it.

“Goodbye, Chibiusa,” Usagi said sorrowfully.

Mamoru placed his hand on her shoulder consolingly. “Usako….” She turned toward him and smiled, knowing that Chibiusa was finally on her way home.

Everything looked so pristine and new as she left the Time Gate. All the damage and destruction was gone and the city was rebuilt, looking just as she had always remembered it. Apparently, she must’ve misjudged her timing – either that, or Pluto had purposely altered her time jump – since she thought she was going to return to the desolation she had left not too long ago.

It didn’t matter if it she was on time or not, what mattered was that she was home.

She couldn’t help but run back toward the Crystal Palace, her Luna Sphere trailing her, as always. As she reached the crest of the first hill that marked the approach to the palace, she saw that everyone had come to welcome her back. Her mother, her father, her five guardians, they were all there waiting for her.

She stopped and stood there, just looking at them. They all looked fine. It was almost as if she had never left.

After she caught her breath, she slowly walked up to them and stopped. The others gave a small start as the saw that their energetic Small Lady had made a perfect curtsey.

“So, our Small Lady has become a real lady after all, hasn’t she?” Knight commented as he folded his arms and nodded proudly. The other Sailor Soldiers nodded their agreement, but the king and queen just watched their daughter, their hearts swelling with pride and love for their daughter.

Finally, she couldn’t hold back any longer.

“Mama!” she cried and rushed forward to hug her mother. The queen went down to her knees to better hug her daughter as Chibiusa gave her the biggest hug she was capable of giving.

“Welcome home,” she said softly, her voice warm and welcome.

“Mama…,” Chibiusa murmured happily as a tear of joy fell ran her cheek.

A short distance away, a boy and girl watched the tableau below. “She’s finally back,” the boy said as he turned to the girl. “Say, where do you think she’s been all this time, oneechan?”

“I don’t know, Ken-kun,” the girl replied to her younger brother.

“None of the others have seen her since Father gathered all of us and hid us during the first attack,” Ken continued as he turned to watch the group again. “I know she wasn’t with us since you, me, Sakura-chan, Yuri-chan, and Keika-chan went looking for her.” He paused as he turned toward his sister and grinned impishly. “Hey, Kei-chan, do you think Usagi-chan will tell us where she’s been all this time?”

Kei smiled back. “Of course, silly. She’s our best friend after all. Let’s go get the others.”

The two children turned and ran down the other side of the hill heading toward the palace.
