It was a more than productive stop, they had spent three weeks in orbit, but were leaving here fully stocked and well rested, well most of the crew was rested—the Captain had been way to busy for rest.  The Gavette were a friendly people, technologically advanced and more than generous, with food supplies, parts and hospitality.  Voyager was prepared to leave orbit and was only awaiting the Captain’s return.  She was the last crewmember to return from the farewell party.  Ambassador Trent Pietrzak arranged the gathering, in their honor and insisted the Captain remain until the very end.

“Janeway to Chakotay.”  She opened the link as soon as she materialized on the pad.

“Chakotay here, Captain”

“Commander.  Please instruct the helm to break orbit and then meet me in my quarters.”  She ignored the second look the young ensign gave her as she briskly left the transporter room.

“Aye, Captain”

It had been a long day and she was in desperate need of sleep, but she hadn’t had any time alone with Chakotay in days and she was anxious to see him.  She leaned against the wall in the lift, light headed for a second when it started to move, but it passed quickly and she attributed it to lack of nutrition—she hadn’t eaten since breakfast and that was barely more than coffee.  As she exited the lift, she saw him enter her quarters and hurried to follow.

“Well, glad you could tear yourself away from the party.”  He chuckled as he held the door for her.

“God.”  She rolled her eyes.  “I thought it would never end.”  She toed off her boots, stepped in close and put her arms around his waist.  “I missed you.”

“You looked like you were having fun.”  He ran his hands down her back as she dropped her head to his chest.

“Too much, they are very nice people, but a bit much for my taste.”

“Too bad, the Ambassador seemed quite taken with you.”  She grunted and he laughed.  “Come now, don’t tell me you didn’t love all that attention.”

“As flattering as that is, I was interested in supplies not Trent’s attention.”

“Trent—well, we are chummy aren’t we.”

“I just spent three weeks with the man—Ambassador Pietrzak gets a little awkward after awhile.”

“We’ve spent six years together and I still call you Captain.”  He teased.

“Not always.”

“I shouldn’t think about that too much, I might get jealous.”

“Yes—Trent is a real danger.”  She lifted her head and rolled her eyes at him, just as her stomach growled.

“Well the least he could have done was feed you—when was the last time you ate?”  He watched her think about it for a minute.  “That is too long—come on at least I’m good for that.”

“Gonna cook?”

“Not at this hour, but I’ll replicate—sit.”  He pointed her to the couch.

“I’m not…”  She shook her head.”  Something light, my stomach isn’t right.”

“Too much party?”

“Maybe.”  She leaned back and put her feet up on the table.  “God, I’m beat.”

“Here—just a little soup and then you can go to bed.”  He handed her a cup and sat beside her.

“I don’t wanna go to bed—I haven’t seen you in days.”

“I could go with you.”

“Subtle.”

“Subtle gets me nowhere.  Maybe I have to rap you over the head and drag you off by your hair.”

“Yeah –great idea and after I phaser you?”

“Hold your fire—it was just a thought.”

“Not a very good one.”  She set the cup on the table and leaned into him.  “I’m fine right here.”

       He put his arm around her and she snuggled in close.  He was trying to be patient, they had decided months ago to give this a try and he was determined not to push her –but… Well, sometimes it was hard, she just wouldn’t go that one step further and he couldn’t understand it—but he would wait.  So once again they slept together, on her couch—god,
he was too old to sleep like this.

In the morning, he woke with his neck cramped, his arm asleep and no Kathryn.  The bathroom door was closed, so he replicated some tea and a cup of coffee and waited for her.  The minutes went by and she didn’t come out so he went to check on her.

“Kathryn?”  He called through the door.  “Kathryn, are you in there?”

“Yeah.”  It was quiet and kind of weak.

“Are you OK?”

“I don’t think so---come here.”

        He slid back the door to find her sitting on the floor.  She was flushed, her head rested back against the wall.

“What’s wrong?”  He knelt and touched her forehead.  “You have a temperature.  Here let me help you up.”  He lifted her, surprised she didn’t protest.  “I think we should go to sickbay.”  Again, no protest.

       He carried her to sickbay, grateful no one was in the corridor on either deck.

“Computer activate EMH.”  He placed her on a biobed.

“Commander, what can…? “  He stopped when he saw the Captain.  “What happened?”

“Don’t know—I found her sitting on the floor, she has a fever.”  He looked down at her.  “Kathryn?”  She looked at him but didn’t answer.

“Alright, Commander.  Let me take a few readings.”  The doctor ran the tricorder over her several times.  “Humm.”

“What is it?”

“I don’t know.  The fever is quite high—I should be able to bring that down, but I have no idea what is causing this.”  He closed the diagnostic case over her.  “Let me run some tests, I’ll let you know what I find.”

        Chakotay returned to his quarters, dressed and reported to the bridge.  He informed Tuvok of the Captain’s condition—or what he knew about it and sat in his command chair and waited.  It was several hours later when the Doctor finally called him to sickbay.  He handed off the bridge and got there as quickly as possible.  The doctor signaled him into the office, he watched through the window while the doctor finished up with Kathryn, then joined him.

“How is she?”  He didn’t like the way she was lying so still on the biobed, nor did he like the look on the doctor’s face.

“Worse.”  The doctor sat at his desk, across from Chakotay.  “Her fever is very high and I can’t seem to bring it down, I have run every test in my data base and still I have no idea what is wrong with her.”

“Is she in danger?”

“I can’t answer that—I don’t know what the problem is.”

“Is she conscious?”

“I have her sedated, as far as I can tell, she is not in any pain, but the fever had her disorientated.”

“So what now---another test?  Something to bring the fever down?  What?”

“Commander—I have used ever modern method I know and a few time tested remedies, to bring the fever down and I have run every test I know.  I found nothing.”  He shifted in his seat.  “The fever it’s self can be quite harmful if we can’t bring it down.”

“So you are suggesting—what?”

“The only thing I haven’t tried—to submerge the Captain in ice water—it could put her in shock, but that we can treat.  I don’t know what else to do.”

“We do what ever we have to, but once the fever is down how do we know it will stay down?”

“We don’t and until we find out what is causing it or this runs its course we keep searching.”

“Where?”

“That is the second reason I wanted you to come down here.  I believe the best place to start is Gavette.  Perhaps she was infected with something native to their planet.”

“Chakotay to bridge.” He wasted no time.

“Tuvok here, Commander.”

“Tuvok reverse course, we are going back to Gavette.  I will brief you as soon as I’m finished here.”

“Aye, Commander.  Tuvok out.”

“Alright Doctor—now what?”

“We cool her down.”  He stood up.  “I have a torpedo casing filled with cold water and with your assistance....”  He led Chakotay out of the office.

They brought her temperature down, but it wasn’t long before it started to climb again.  It took them seven hours to return to Gavette at maximum warp.  The doctor spent it trying to keep the Captain’s temperature down, it was never normal but he did manager to keep it at a relatively safe level.  Chakotay apprised Tuvok of the situation and spent most of his time in sickbay.

“Bridge to Chakotay”

“Go ahead Tuvok”

“We are about to enter orbit around Gavette”

“Hail the Ambassador and put it through to the Doctor’s office.”  He sat at the doctor’s desk, he could see the monitor and Kathryn from here.

“Aye, Commander.”

“Ambassador Pietrzak.” The screen lit up.

“Commander?”  The Ambassador was clearly surprised to be speaking to him.  “I’m sorry, When they told me your ship had returned, I expected Kathryn.”

“Yes, well.  The Captain is ill.”  Chakotay couldn’t help resenting this man, he knew, it was totally without reason.

“Nothing serious I hope.”

“That’s why we’re here—we don’t know what it is.”  He saw genuine concern on the Ambassador’s face.  “We were hoping you might be able to help us.”

“Certainly, anything we can do—but ..”

“We were hoping to consult some of your medical people.  Nothing in our medical data base has been helpful and we are not sure even how serious her condition is.”

“May I speak with her?  Is she conscious?”

“I’m afraid that isn’t possible—she has been running an extremely dangerous fever and we have her sedated.  If you would allow our doctor to confer…”

“I will assemble a medical team immediately and contact you as soon as they arrive.”

“Thank you, Ambassador.”

It took only twenty minutes before the Ambassador had the assembled team beamed aboard Voyager.  They conferred with the doctor and ran a battery of tests.  Sickbay was quarantined and even Chakotay was not allowed in.  Finally, six hours after the team arrived, Chakotay was summoned to Sickbay.

      His first surprise upon entering was that most of the medical team had returned to the planet, only Dr. Plumeri remained.  His second surprise was Kathryn sitting up on the biobed.

“Ka—Captain.”  He crossed directly to her.

“Chakotay.”  She gave him a weak smile.

“How are you feeling?”

“OK—not good but, OK.”  She placed her hand on his arm.  “They have given me some medication, but they have to modify it to suit human physiology.”

“Commander—you’re here, good.”  The doctor and Dr. Plumeri exited the lab.  “You know Dr. Plumeri.”

“Yes, we met when she beamed up—Doctor any news”

“Commander we have narrowed this down to two diseases, both fairly common on our planet and both curable.”  Dr. Plumeri addressed them both.  “I want to do some further research before administering any more medication to the Captain—you physiology is slightly different from ours.”

“How long?”

“A day maybe two—that’s one reason I wanted you here Commander.  The Captain won’t be able to return to duty for several days –even after we determine the proper medication.  Although both of these illnesses are common and easily treated in our species, the Captain’s reaction is considerably different.  We are uncertain as to the correct treatment for humans.  The second reason is that I would like the doctor here to accompany me to the surface to assist with the research—his knowledge of your species is invaluable to this project.”

“Alright.”  Chakotay turned to the Captain.  “Kathryn, is there a problem with this?”

“No that’s fine.”  She faced the doctors.  “How soon will I relapse without more medication?”

“What I gave you should keep you fairly stable for a few days.  It is imperative we ascertain the correct treatment for your system.”

 “I see, may I return to my quarters?”

“That is advisable, rest and proper nutrition are essential.  And Captain ..”  She hesitated, glancing at both men then back at the Captain.  “You will need to limit certain physical activities.”

“Such as?”

“We will discuss it in detail once we have a chance to speak privately.”

“Privately?”  The Captain looked at each of them.  “The doctor needs to have all of the medical facts and the Commander should also be fully apprised of my condition—he will need to run this ship in my absence.”

“I’m aware of that Captain, but our discussion will not effect your health or the running of the ship.”

“What will it effect?”

“I just want to be sure we have no other cases of this disease, or that we treat anyone who might have contracted it.”

“You are concerned that I might have infected others?”

“It is possible, we will discuss it.”

“All the more reason for the doctor and the Commander to be present.  They are the two people I had the most contact with since my return.  Obviously the doctor is not at risk being a hologram.”

“Captain, the disease is transmitted only through intimate contact.”

“Well, I usually am a very hands on Captain, but I returned very late that night and..”

 “How intimate?”  Chakotay interrupted her.

  Dr. Plumeri looked them over, unsure of how to proceed.  She wasn’t sure of the relationship involved here, the doctor had already been informed and certainly the Captain needed to understand, but how much the first officer needed to know was in question.

“Captain, Perhaps you and I should continue this discussion privately.”  She could see the Captain was not grasping her meaning.  She wondered if it were due to the fever or perhaps the medication---certainly the Captain of a Starship could not be this naïve.

“Doctor, whatever you have to say can be said right here.  There is no reason to keep my doctor or my first officer in the dark.”

“As you wish, Captain.  It has been know to only be communicable through sexual contact.”  She watched, as a surprised Captain turned to stare at her first officer; he dropped his hand from it’s resting place on her shoulder and looked away.

“Chakotay…” The Captain, for the first time, was visibly shaken—but by the doctor's words or the Commander's reaction they weren’t sure.  “Doctor there has to be another way.”  Her eyes remained on her first officer as she spoke.

“I’m afraid Captain, we have never found another way.”  Dr. Plumeri tried to speak cautiously.  “Your physiology is slightly different, however…”

“There is another way.”  The Captain turned toward the doctors, her command posture firmly in place.  “I expect you to find it—my crew could be at risk here.”

“Captain, I..”

“Doctor, I appreciate your position.”  She cut her off.  “Let me make mine clear to you.  I could not have contracted this disease through sexual contact –there is another way.”

“We should be getting started.”  The EMH offered.  “Captain, you may return to your quarters.”  He led Dr. Plumeri toward the office.

        The Captain slid off the biobed, uncertain of what to do, and unsteady on her feet.  She didn’t dare to look back at Chakotay, although she could feel his eyes burning on her back.

“Commander, could you call for a site to site please.”  She wore only the surgical gown, she was felt weak and so very tired, walking to her quarters was a very bad idea.

“Chakotay to transporter room one”

“Kreppein here, Commander.”

“Transport the Captain to her quarters, please”

“Aye Sir”

The Captain shimmered away before they even had a chance to look at one another.  She found herself standing alone in the middle of her living area.  She was weak and unsteady, but unsure whether to blame her condition or Chakotay’s reaction.  It wouldn’t help to dwell on it, he was shocked by the doctor’s words—she had been herself, she felt certain once he had time to think, he would realize there had to be another way.

       She wanted a bath, that always made her feel better, but being unsteady yet, she decided to replicate a cup of tea first.  Sitting on the couch, she put her feet up and drew the blanket over her, just a few minutes rest and a cup of tea and she would be fine.

“Kathryn.”  He spoke softly, he hated to wake her, but he needed to know she was only sleeping.  “Kathryn”

“Hummm.”  She struggled to open her eyes.  “Chakotay?”

“Yes, sorry—I was just making sure you were alright.”  He brushed her hair back, noting only a slight temperature.

"It’s OK.”  She smiled at him, happy just to know he was here.  “How long have I..” She struggled to sit up.

“You left sick bay about two hours ago.”

“Only meant to sit a minute, must have fallen asleep.”  She ran her hand through her hair and picked up her tea. “Cold”

“I’ll get you another.”

“Thanks”

“How are you feeling?”  He brought her a fresh cup.

“Groggy.”  She sipped her tea.  “How are you?”

“Me?  I’m—Oh –I’m OK.”  He sat next to her.  “I spoke with the doctor’s after you left.”

“OH?”  She put the tea down on the table.  “And?”

“Nothing—they don’t know—they went planetside to determine the correct dosage.”

“Yes, I know that.  Did Dr. Plumeri offer a different explanation?”

“No.”

“I see, and you---do you believe her?”

“Kathryn, she isn’t accusing you of anything—she has a century of medical research to back her up.”

“I’m not questioning the Doctor’s intentions.  I asked what you believe.”

“Kathryn…..”

“Chakotay, it’s a simple question.”  She glared at him.  “Who do You believe ---the doctor or—me?”

“I wa—I believe you Kathryn,…”

“But?”

“She does have scientific evidence….”

“Since when, Chakotay---tell me—please--, since when are you such a pure scientist?”  She got up and walked behind the couch, leaning over his shoulder.  “All the years I’ve know you –never once- have you made a decision  based solely on science--- it’s always come from here.”  She clutched at her stomach.  “What does you gut tell you now?”

“It tells me the doctor is wrong.”  He knew there was still a slight ring of doubt in his voice, but he did believe her.

“But.”  She turned and walked toward the viewport.  “But she still has the evidence.”

“Kathryn….”

“No—Chakotay.”  She came back and sat down.  “I’m sorry --I do understand your doubts.”  She rested her elbows on her knees and put her chin in her hands.  “It makes me want to vomit—but –I do understand.”  After a minute, she patted his knee and stood up.  “I think I’ll take a bath.”

       He said nothing, there was nothing to say.  He wanted to believe her, he did believe her—but he couldn’t totally discount a hundred years of scientific research.

“Kim to Janeway”

“Janeway here, what is it Mr. Kim.”  She was half way to the bathroom.

“Captain, Ambassador Pietrzak is hailing you.”

“Put it through Harry.”  She returned to her desk and flipped on the monitor.

“I’ll run you bath.”  She nodded and he left the room.

 “Ambassador”

 “Captain, how are you?”

 “I’ve been better, Trent.  I’ll be stuck here in my quarters for a while.”

 “Oh Kathryn, I am so sorry.”

 “Not your fault.  I’m sure I’ll be fine.”  She was tired and so she leaned on the desk propping her head on her hand.  She didn’t notice Chakotay return.

“We have provided the doctors with everything they need I’m sure they will find the correct treatment for your species very soon.”

“I’m grateful for your help.”

“Nonsense, it is the least I can do, after all I am responsible for this ailment you suffer.”

“I wouldn’t go that far.”

“I would-- you came to me, in good faith and I offered help and hospitality---this was not part of the deal.”

“I’m sure it will work out.”  She gave him a weak smile.

“You look tired, go and rest.  I will speak to you tomorrow.”

“I will, thank you.  Good night, Trent.”

“Good night, Kathryn” As she got up to recycle her teacup, she noticed Chakotay watching her.  “Hi, didn’t realize you were there.”

“Yeah, I noticed”

“What?”

“Nothing –your bath is ready.”

“Thank you.”  He just stood there watching her.  “What?”  He shook his head and turned away.  “Chakotay, talk to me—what’s wrong?”

“I have appointments with several crewmen.  I really have to go”

“Tell me what you’re thinking.”

“I don’t think you want to hear.”

“Tell me, anyway.”

“Why did he call you?”

“To see how I was, Chakotay he feels badly—I contracted this on his planet—he’s concerned.”

“A little too concerned?”

“I don’t think so—I would be concerned if someone got sick after visiting Voyager.”

“Yes I suppose, but he just seems to take it a little too personally.”

“I’m really too tired for word games.”  She leaned against the table.  “Could you just say what it is you mean?”

“I’m sorry.”  He shook his head and smiled at her.  “I don’t mean anything.  I have to  go.”  He turned back just before the door.  “Will you be alright?”

“Fine.”  She watched the door close behind him, then with all the strength she had left, she heaved her cup against the door smashing it.

She watched the droplets of cold tea streak down the door to be absorbed in the carpet.  She was so tired, she sat on the floor and leaned against the couch.  He was upset—upset that she was ill and upset at the doctor’s implications.  She new he wanted to believe her and she knew how hard it was to ignore that nagging doubt a century of science could produce.  She thought she might vomit—whether it was the illness or Chakotay—she still didn’t know.  She drew her knees up and rested her head on them—she would take her bath in just a few minutes.

        He hadn’t meant to be so long, both appointments ran longer than he intended and then B’Elanna hailed him and Neelix cornered him—it had been over three hours.  He hurried to the turbolift, hoping no one else would delay him.  By now, Kathryn would be convinced he didn’t believe her.  He rang her chime once and when she didn’t answer he thought she might be sleeping so he let himself in.

      It was dark inside, he went straight to the bedroom to check on her, he found an empty bed.  He checked the bathroom, found a tub full of cold water but not Kathryn.

“Computer locate Captain Janeway.”  He couldn’t imagine where she could be.

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY IS IN HER QUARTERS DECK THREE SECTON ALPHA301”

“Lights full.”  He reentered the living quarters, searching for her.

        He found her lying on the floor between the coffee table and the couch.  He bent down and scooped her up, resting her on the couch.

“Kathryn.”  He shook her.  “Kathryn.”  Her fever had returned, he couldn’t wake her  “Computer locate EMH”

“EMERGENCY MEDICAL HOLOGRAM IS NOT ABOARD VOYAGER”

“Chakotay to the bridge”

“Yes, Commander.”  Tuvok’s cool voice responded.

“Tuvok, hail the doctor and put him through to the Captain’s quarters.”

“Aye, Sir.”

       He pulled a blanket over her and brought a cool wash cloth from the bathroom.  He wiped her face with it, she shivered even though her body radiated heat.

“Tuvok to Commander Chakotay”

“Yes Tuvok.”

“I have located the doctor, I am patching him through to the Captain’s console.”

“Understood.”  He tucked the blanket around her and turned on monitor.  “Doctor.”

“Commander is there a problem?”

“Yes, the Captain’s fever has returned, she’s not responding.”

“Odd Dr. Plumeri was certain the medication would control it for days.  How high is the fever Commander?---ask the computer I had it monitor her.”

“Computer what is the Captain’s current body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERTURE IS 104 DEGREES”

“I heard that Commander –it’s not as high as it was, but certainly we must prevent from going higher.  Are you in her quarters?”

“Yes.”

“Good.  I want you to put her in a cool bath—not too cold, this time.  I don’t want her to go into shock with out me there—we just want to keep the temperature from going higher.”

“OK, when will you know something?”

“We expect to be finished here soon, although I’m not sure how this turn of events will impact our research.  Keep me informed of any changes in the Captain’s condition.”

“I will, Chakotay out.”

         He slipped off the medical gown she was still wearing and carried her limp body to the bathroom.  The bath he ran earlier was cool enough now for his purposes, he gently lowered her into it.  The water was cool but it wasn’t the shocking cold the doctor had used earlier.  She moaned as her hot skin came in contact with the cool water.  He rested her against the tub, carefully keeping one arm around her to prevent her from slipping.  He brushed her hair back and used the wash cloth to wipe her face.

       She shivered and tossed her head, at least it was some sort of life sign.  He gazed down at the frail woman resting against his arm, so hard to imagine her like this—certainly no one else on this ship would ever understand just how fragile she really was.  Her eyes fluttered, opened then closed again.

“Computer, what is the Captain’s current body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 103 DEGREES.”

“Chakotay.”  She struggled to open her eyes.  “I’m cold”

“I know, just another minute, then I’ll let you out.”  He wiped her face again.  “Your fever was too high.”

“The doctor?”

“I talked to him, they are still working.”  She closed her eyes.  “Don’t worry, he will find the answer.”

“Chakotay…”  The sadness in her eyes, when she opened them tore at him.

“Kathryn, don’t.”  He bent and kissed her forehead.  “I do believe you---if we never find that particular answer, it won’t matter, just as long as you get well.”

“But when you left..”

“I really had appointments, I was upset –yes, but not because I don’t believe you.”

“Chakotay, I’m cold.”  She shivered.

“OK, Computer what is the Captain’s current body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 101.4 DEGREES.”

“Alright, Kathryn—let’s just hope we don’t have to do this again.”  He started to get up.  “Can you sit up until I get a towel.”

“I’m a big girl—I can sit up all by myself, now.”

“You cert—er..”  He rolled his eyes and smiled at her.  “Yeah, I’ll get the towel.”  He chuckled as he walked away.

        Wrapping her in the towel, he carried her to her bedroom.  He put her down on the bed next to the nightclothes he had laid out for her.

“You be alright?  I need to let the doctor know how you are.”

“I’ll be fine –I think I can still remember how to dress myself.”  She looked bright and alert.

     He left her on the bed and went into the desk.  It only took Tuvok a minute before the doctor appeared on the screen.

“Commander, how is she?”

“Better, the bath brought her temperature down and she is awake and alert---seems as soon as it goes below 102 she wakes up.”

“Yes, I discovered that earlier.  You must keep a close watch on her—don’t let it go up again.”

“OK, when will you be back?”

“Soon I hope—it seems you are far more different physically than we first thought.  Keep me informed if there is any change.”

“I will doctor—and er-- did you find out how—er.”

“No, Commander---not yet.”

“OK—Chakotay out.”  He ran his hand over his face.  “Kathryn, would you like some tea?”  He called out to her before entering the bedroom.  “Can I come in?”

“Yes—I’m decent.”  She laughed.  “Not that it matters.”

“I’m sorry, Kathryn—I thought it was better than trying to get the wet gown off you.”

“It’s alright.”  She struggled to her feet, then reached for him to steady herself.  “I think I’d like to have tea in the other room.”

“OK.”  He held her steady and helped her to the couch.  “Can I convince you to eat something?  Maybe just a little toast?”

“OK, mom—I’ll try.”  She laughed as he settled her on the couch and put the blanket over her lap.

         When he brought their tea, he sat next to her and she immediately snuggled close to him.

“Maybe, I shouldn’t.”  She suddenly sat up and moved back.

“Kathryn, if I’m going to get this –I will.  It’s a little late now to worry.”  He chuckled and pulled her back to him.

“I’m cold.”

“Unfortunately when you get warm we will probably have to do this again.”  He hugged her close running his hands up and down her back.  “Better”

“Humm.”  She dropped her head to his chest.  “Chakotay…”

“Kathryn, stop torturing yourself with this—there is another way.”  He kissed her head.  “They don’t know everything or they would have found a treatment by now.  Just rest and worry about getting better.”

“I’m so tired.”

“Come on, no more sleeping on the floor—to bed with you.”  He got up and took her with him.  “Let’s go.”  He guided her to her bed and tucked her in.  “Computer what is the Captain’s body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 101.82 DEGREES.”

“Computer alert me if the Captain’s temperature reaches 103 degrees.”  He waited for the computer to beep.  “OK, time for you to get some sleep”

“Stay with me—please.”  She held the blanket open for him.

“OK.”  He slipped off his boots, jacket and trousers and climbed in beside her.

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 103 DEGREES.  CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 103.4 DEGREES.  CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S BODY TEMPERATURE IS 103.6 DEGREES.’’

“Computer, silence alert.”  He sat up, trying to clear his head.  She was lying next to him, her skin was hot to the touch, but her body shivered.  “Kathryn?”  He shook her, as he suspected she did not respond.  “Computer locate EMH”

“THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL HOLOGRAM IS NOT ON BOARD VOYAGER.”

“Chakotay to bridge”

“Simmons here, Commander”

“Lieutenant, Hail the EMH on the planet and put him through to the Captain’s quarters.”

“Aye, Sir.”

      He jumped out of bed and started the water in the tub.  It struck him as very odd that, with all the medical advances of the 24 the century, the only way to treat Kathryn, at this point, was to force her body temperature down.  The console beep.

“Doctor?”  He flipped on the screen to see the familiar face.

“Yes, Commander, what’s wrong?”

“Her fever has returned and it’s climbing fast.  Computer what is the Captain’s body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 104.8 DEGREES.”

“It was 103 just three minutes ago, I’m running a bath.”

“Alright Commander, you go ahead with that.  I’m on my way”

“OK—Chakotay out”

        Chakotay slipped off her nightgown and returned Kathryn’s limp body to the tub.  She made no sound when he submerged her this time, not even a groan.  He used the wash cloth to wipe her face, still no response.

“Computer what is the Captain’s current body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 105.2 DEGREES.”

        He ran colder water into the tub and wiped her down with the cloth again.

“Kathryn.”  She didn’t respond.  “Computer what is the Captain’s current body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 105.6 DEGREES.”

“Kathryn, please.”  He shook her trying to hold back the panic.

“Commander.”  The doctor’s voice called to him from the other room.

“In the bathroom, Doctor.  Computer what is the Captain’s current body temperature?”

“CAPTAIN JANEWAY’S CURRENT BODY TEMPERATURE IS 105.8 DEGREES.”

“Commander.”  He heard the computer’s report and coupled with the panic on the Commander’s face he was almost frightened to look at the lifeless body in the tub.  He took several quick readings.  “Doctor to Paris.”

“Paris here, Doc.”

“Mr. Paris, Prepare a stasis chamber immediately.”

“Sure Doc –for wh..”

“Now Tom—Doctor out.”  He checked the readings again; her temperature was 106.  “Commander.”  He put his hand on his shoulder and waited for him to look up.  “We need to remove her from the tub, now and move her to sick bay.”  Chakotay nodded and lifted the Captain from the water.  “No time to waste, Commander—wrap her in this.”  He spread out a sheet and they wrapped her in it.  “Computer emergency medical beam out –transport myself the Commander and the Captain to sickbay.”

“Mr. Paris –are you ready?”  He guided the Commander toward the stasis chamber.

“Almost Doc, I…”  He glanced up to see Chakotay place the Captain in the chamber.

“Tom?”

“ER --Yeah one sec, Doc.”  Tom finished his preparation.  “OK it’s ready.”

“Commander.”  The doctor touched Chakotay’s arm to move him away, as the chamber closed and sealed over the Captain.  “OK Tom ready, activate.”

“Activating.”

“Keep monitoring it Tom.  I’ll be in my office.”  Tom nodded as the Doctor led Chakotay away from the Captain.  “Commander come in the office, we need to talk.”

         He followed Chakotay into the office and took a seat behind his desk, watching the Commander pace next to the glass partition, running his hands through his hair.  Finally, Chakotay turned his attention to the doctor.

“Now what?”

“Have a seat, Commander.”  The doctor motioned toward a chair.  “The stasis chamber will keep her safe until we get to the bottom of this.  I could not allow her temperature to remain that high and as of now we have no way to bring it down.”

“What about the Gavette, any progress?”

“They have made progress, but I’m afraid not enough.  I will certainly be in constant contact with Dr. Plumeri.  If we could determine how the Captain became infected perhaps we  might ..”

“Doctor, Dr. Plumeri doesn’t understand, but I know you do---Kathryn did not engage in any sexual activity on that planet.---Hell Doc, She doesn’t even do that---here..”

“I know, Commander.”  He was well aware of the recent changes in their relationship and he knew the Captain well enough to know that if she had yet to embark on a physical relationship with this man, she certainly was not indulging herself with any stray aliens. The doctor reviewed the sickbay logs, from his time on the planet.  “No other crewmen have become ill, so we must determine what the Captain did that differed from the rest of the crew.”

“We all went there—she just spent more time there.  We all ate the same food, breathed the same air…”

“Did she go anywhere, do anything of a diplomatic nature than no one else did?”

“I don’t know.  I..”

“Bridge to Commander Chakotay”

“Chakotay here”

“Commander Ambassador Pietrzak is hailing.  He is requesting permission to beam aboard.”

“Permission granted Ensign, I’ll meet him in transporter room one.”

“Aye Sir”

“Maybe he can tell us something.”  Chakotay stood and looked through the partition.  “Is she alright?”

“Commander you know as well as I do –as long as the chamber functions she is fine.”  He saw the sorrow on the other man’s face. “I’ll monitor her closely, Commander”

“Thanks, Doctor—I didn’t mean..”

“I understand, Commander.”

“Yeah.”  He nodded to the doctor and with one last look at the chamber, he left to meet with the Ambassador.

         The Ambassador was waiting when Chakotay reached the transporter room.  He had come alone and just smiled indulgently at the very nervous ensign who tried to make him comfortable while he waited.

“Ambassador, Sorry to keep you waiting.”  Chakotay nodded at the relieved ensign.

“Commander, I have just arrived and should apologize for my intrusion.”

“No intrusion, Ambassador, it gives me the opportunity to thank you personally for all your assistance. Please come and we will find a more suitable place to talk.”

“Thank you, Commander.”  He turned to the Ensign.  “And thank you for your assistance.”

“You are quite welcome Ambassador.”  The ensign blushed.

“Ambassador, if you will follow me, we can talk comfortably in the Captain’s ready room.”

       Chakotay led the Ambassador through the corridor to the lift, pointing out the stations they passed along the way.  They took the lift to deck one and crossed the bridge silently.  Once inside the ready room, Chakotay directed the Ambassador to the couch.

“Ambassador, what brings you here?”  Chakotay really didn’t want to chat, he wanted any information the Ambassador might have and he wanted to get back to Kathryn.

“Commander, I’m concerned about the Captain and I’d like to be sure we are doing everything possible to assist you in this matter.”  He watched the other man’s expression closely.  “How is Kathryn?”

“The Captain,..”  Chakotay stopped and considered the man before him.  He appeared genuinely concerned—Kathryn trusted him--  “She is not good.  We have been unable to control her fever and finally the doctor placed her in stasis.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”  He appeared shocked by this turn of events.  “ I have only just been informed of the diagnosis---if the doctors are correct it their assessment, you species must be considerably different.”

“How so?”

“Kathryn’s condition is far more serious than I have ever know of any of my people and the…”  He considered Chakotay carefully.  “I’m sure you have been informed that among my people the disease is only know to be communicable through sexual contact”.

“Yes, I have been informed, however..”

“Commander, I have already informed my medical personal that this is not a consideration.”

“Oh?”

“She did spend all of her time on the planet with me.”  Both men stared.  “Commander, may I be blunt?”

“By all means, say what’s on your mind.”

“I came here today to see you.”

“Me?  Why is that?”

“When Dr. Plumeri finally told me her findings, I felt I needed to see you—to explain, if necessary, that Kathryn has in no way violated your trust.”

“You don’t have to defend the Captain to me.”

“I didn’t mean to imply that Kathryn needed defending—I only wanted to put your mind to rest----should you have any doubts.”

“Ambassador, thank you for your time.  I do appreciate what you are trying to do—but let me assure you, it is not necessary.”

“Good, it is nice to know her faith in you is well placed.”  He stood.  “Commander, I will take up no more of your time.  Thank you for your hospitality and please give Kathryn my regards when she is better.”

“Yes, Ambassador I will do that.”  He led the way to the door, stopping just short of opening it.   “Ambassador, did the Captain speak to you about me?”

“Only in the most professional terms, but no more was necessary.”  The man smiled and placed a hand on Chakotay’s arm.  “She is reverent when she speaks your name, her eyes light up when you enter the room and your presence makes her radiant.  A sightless man could not miss the signs.  Good night, Commander, if there is anything more I can do please don’t hesitate to ask”

“Yes, thank you---Ambassador—Perhaps you can help.”

“Anything.”

“Many of us went to the surface, attended the same functions, ate the same food----what is it the Captain did differently?  Did she go somewhere, eat some thing, come in contact with something----anything that the other crewmen didn’t.”

“I’m afraid the only place Kathryn went was to my private gardens, I don’t see how that can help you.”

“I don’t either, but thank you and please if you think of anything else…”

“Certainly Commander and if there is anything we can do please don’t hesitate to ask”

     Chakotay escorted his guest back to the transporter room and returned to sick bay to check on Kathryn.  There was of course nothing new and her condition, being in a stasis chamber, was unchanged.  He was beginning to become concerned about the crew.  They knew the ship had returned to Gavette and most were aware that the Captain was ill—word was beginning to circulate that she had been placed in stasis and the crew was becoming edgy.   If a treatment was not found soon, he would be forced to make some kind of official announcement to the crew—what he could tell them was not encouraging.

      Reluctantly Chakotay left sickbay and made an appearance in the mess hall.  It wouldn’t do for the crew to think that he couldn’t function in her absence.  Not that he cared at this moment, but Kathryn would, so he gave it his best effort.   Tom and B’Elanna were there, so he joined them.

“Hey, have a seat.”  B’Elanna looked him over.  “She’s no better?”

“No and no news on a treatment yet.”  Chakotay sat across from her and played with his food.

“She’s fine where she is.”  Tom tried to sound encouraging.  “They will turn something up soon.”

“Hope so.”  Chakotay smiled—rather forced but he hoped the crew wouldn’t notice that.  “The Ambassador is doing all he can to help.”

“Sounds like you don’t like him much.”  B’Elanna had seen his color rise when he mentioned the ambassador.”

“I don’t, but I didn’t think I was that obvious.”

“Probably only to me.”  She eyed him.  “Why?”

“That’s the thing---I don’t really have a reason—I just don’t like him  I…”

“Jealous?”  She meant to try to tease him into a better mood, but recognized her mistake immediately.  “Hey, I’m only joking.”

“I know B’Ella—but, I think you’re right….”

“Hey, you know better than that.”

“Yeah—I do ---but I can’t help it.  I still don’t like him.”  He made a conscious effort to change his expression, when he noticed several crewmembers watching him.  “What’s the word around the ship?  How are they taking this?”

“They’re worried—it only natural.”  B’Elanna tried to sound reassuring.

“What do they know?”

“Everyone knows we came back cause she’s sick---so far not many know she is sick enough to be in stasis.”  Tom smiled.  “I’m keep my ears open—if there’s any sign of panic ---I’ll know it.”

“Thanks, Tom.  I’m afraid I’m a little preoccupied.  Haven’t paid proper attention to the concerns of the crew.”

“Not a problem…”  Tom laughed.  “Hey, they would be disappointed if you weren’t.”

“Yeah.”  His smile was real this time and he chuckled.  “Guess they wouldn’t know who I was, if I wasn’t mopin’ after Kathryn.”

“Well, it is sort of a trademark.”  B’Elanna laughed.

“Kim to Chakotay”

“Yes, Harry.”

“Ambassador Pietrzak is hailing, he says it is imperative he speak with you.”

“Alright Harry, on my way.”  He rose and forced a smile.  “Maybe he has some good news.”

“Yeah—hope so.”  B’Elanna touched his arm and smiled.

         Chakotay took the lift up one deck to the bridge.  He crossed to the ready room and signaled for Harry to put the Ambassador through.

“Ambassador—what can I do for you?”  Chakotay tried to control the rage he felt as the man’s face appeared on the view screen.

“Commander, I have some people here and I think you should speak to them.”

“Does this have something to do with the Captain’s illness?”

“It is possible, Commander.  If you could come down here?”

“Now?”

“I think that would be best.”

“Alright, On my way.  Chakotay out.”

       He informed Tuvok of his leaving, beamed down and inside of fifteen minutes he was standing inside the Ambassadors office awaiting the unknown guests.  The door behind him opened and he turned to face two women---one an older dignified looking woman, the other a beautiful young girl.

“Welcome ladies, please come in.”  Pietrzak ushered the women into the room.

“Ambassador, thank you for arranging this meeting.”  The older woman spoke.

“It is always a pleasure to assist you in anyway, please.”  He brought them toward Chakotay.  “Let me introduce you ---Commander, this is Dr. Mar’trinka and her lovely assistant Bre’tara.  Ladies this is Commander Chakotay of the Starship Voyager.

“A pleasure to meet you ladies.”

“And you, Commander.”  Mar’trinka spoke and the younger one cast her eyes down and blushed, when Chakotay smiled at her. “We are hoping to be of assistance to you---as your Captain was to Bre’tara.”

“You know the Captain?”

“We have met.  Let us sit and I will explain.”  They took seats around the Ambassador’s desk.  “As in any society, there are those in ours who, for whatever reason, are over looked ---who fall somehow below the standards of society and are passed by, so to speak.  Even with our continued efforts to reach all citizens and provide proper medical care equally this unfortunately happens.  As a result of this fault in our social structure, there is a small segment of society in which non life threatening diseases tend to go untreated.  Dietera---with which the Captain has been diagnosed— is such a non life threatening disease in our society and so in these unfortunate circles often goes untreated.  Outside of the continued spread of the disease, there is one other major side effect.  Children—sick children.”

“This is regrettable, but what does that have to do with the Captain?”

“Let me explain—I am sorry it is a long explanation, but I think the background may be useful.”

“Certainly, I’m sorry to be so impatient.”

“It is understandable, Commander.”  Mar’trinka, glanced at the ambassador before continuing.  “When a child is conceived by parents, one or both of whom have active Dietera, it is passed to the child but can not be treated until after birth.  At that point the child begins a maintenance treatment which can last up to five years before their small bodies can overcome this disease.   These children for the most part are otherwise healthy and normal, but they do on occasion experience high fevers similar to what the Captain experienced  ---although usually not as severe.  Because of the on going treatment and constant care required these children are often given over to the state by parents unprepared to deal with their needs.  At Hatcher Home, we care for such children and most times integrate them back into the main stream of society long before their tenth birthday.  Bre’tara here was such a child, but in her case she loved working with the other children so much she asked for and was granted permission to stay and work with us and she has been a wonderful influence on the younger children.  As you can see, at 15 She is a beautiful young woman and as such attracts the attention of young men wherever she goes.  Of course this in normal behavior in most species and not a problem most of the time.  However, occasionally some of these young men get a bit out of hand.  And Commander this is where your Captain comes in.  Last week as Bre’tara was walking several small children back from school she encountered several young men who taunted her.  She had words with them and they frightened and chased the children.  As Bre’tara tried to gather them and calm them she tripped and fell.  It was at this point your Captain, who was in the ambassador's garden, heard the commotion and came out in search of it.  She reprimanded the young men and helped Bre’tara up, gathering the children as she went.  Bre’tara had been caring one of the babies from the home and the child hit her head—nothing serious –but there was a small cut which the Captain wiped off as she calmed the child.  The Captain helped Bre’tara bring the children home and that is where I met her.”

“And you think the Captain was infected by this child?”

"I think it is possible---it has never to our knowledge happened before---the children have never been a danger to anyone—but you Captain’s symptoms seem similar and your species is different than any other we have encountered—I am merely offering it as a possibility.”

“Ambassador….?”

“Commander, I have already instructed the research teams to look into this option.  Dr. Mar’trinka has done extensive research in this field and if she considers this a possibility it must be taken seriously.”

“I am sorry not to have come forward with this information before, but until today—when the Ambassador contacted me,  we were unaware of  your Captain’s illness.  ”

“I understand---and thank you.  I appreciate any help you might give us.”

“It is the least we could do, Commander.  Your Captain is a kind and generous person.  I only hope we have helped her.”

“So do I---Ambassador, has this information been given to out EMH?  He may be able to use it to make a new search of out data bases.”

“I have ordered our research team to send him the data on the infected children, He should have it as we speak.”

“Then I think I will return and check on the Captain.”  He stood.  “Thank you, ladies.”

“Commander, if we may-- Bre’tara and I would like to accompany you to your ship.  I believe we could be of assistance to your EMH.”

“I would welcome your help--both of you.”  He smiled causing Bre’tara to blush a new. “Ambassador, I will be in touch.”

“Yes, Commander.  Good bye.”

The three of them returned to Voyager, materializing in transporter room one.  Chakotay checked in with Tuvok on  his way to sick bay.  He introduced Dr. Mar’trinka and Bre’tara to the doctor and left them to work, going to check on Kathryn.

“She will recover.”  She spoke quietly, but knew she had startled him just the same.  “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

“Oh—it’s alright.”  He turned surprised to find the shy child behind him.  “I was just checking on the Captain.”

“Yes, she will be alright—Mar’trinka is very good.”

“That’s good to know.”  He smiled and she blushed again.

“It’s true—not just because she has raised me—she is one of the best—no matter what the others say.”

“The others?”

The important Doctors of our society—they often look down because of the work she does.”

“With the children?”

“Yes, some think that they----we –should have been terminated.  They say we are a drain on society.  We are costly and use resources that could be put to better use.”  She smiled and raised her chin.  “But we are lucky we have Mar’trinka and I hope to carry on her work someday.”

“Oh you want to be a doctor?”

“Yes---The training is expensive, but Mar’trinka says if I want it we will find a way—and I have already learned so much from her.”

“I’m sure she’s right.  Should you be with her now?”

“No—I would be in the way—she has your---EMH, to work with.”  She blushed again.  “She likes to show me other worlds—other lifestyles ---other choices.   That’s why she wanted me to come along---to see a starship.”

“That’s wise, you are fortunate to have someone as generous as her.”  He watched her study the stasis chamber. “Have you see one of these before?”

“I have learned about the procedure, but I have never seen it before---she looks comfortable.”

“Yes, I‘m sure she is. I have experienced stasis; it isn’t uncomfortable.  It’s a lot like sleeping.”

“Really –I have never known anyone who actually used one of these.”

“And you have never seen a Starship—let’s take a walk.  I’ll show you the ship and we can talk.”

“Alright, can I just let Mar’trinka know?”

“Sure we’ll stop in the lab and tell her.”  With one more look at Kathryn, they headed for the lab.  Chakotay showed Bre’tara the hydroponics bay, engineering and astrometrics.  He introduced her to Seven, Naomi, Neelix and several other crewmen before joining Tom, B’Elanna and Harry in the messhall.  After making sure Bre’tara was comfortable with them, Chakotay returned to sick bay, it had been a couple of hours and he was anxious to see if Mar’trinka had discovered anything.

         The EMH and Mar’trinka were just exiting the lab as he entered sickbay.

“Ahh Commander, we were just going to call you.”  The doctor noticed him first.

“Did you find something?”

“No not yet, but I’m sure we will.  We thought it best to get a fresh start in the morning.”

“I’m afraid that’s my fault, Commander.”  Mar’trinka offered.  “I’m not as young as I used to be and I think a good nights sleep is in order.”

“I’m sorry Doctor, I didn’t even stop to consider the time.  Will you be returning to the surface, or staying here?”

“Commander, I suggested to Mar’trinka that she and Bre’tara use the VIP suite.”

“Good idea, if that’s acceptable-why don’t we get you some dinner first.  I left Bre’tara in the mess hall with B’Elanna, Tom and Harry, we can join them.”

“Alright.”  She turned back to the EMH.  “Doctor I rise quite early, I will be back in the morning.”

“Fine—If I am not here, just ask the computer to activate me.”

“I will, thank you doctor, good night.”  She joined Chakotay   “Amazing –this EMH of yours.”

“Yeah.”  He chuckled.  “Almost human.”

“Interesting.”

         The mess hall was empty when they arrived, except for Bre’tara, Harry and Neelix.  Seeing them enter Neelix jumped up and bustled over.

“Commander.”  He nodded.  “And You must be the wonderful Doctor Bre’tara told me about.”  He leaned in and whispered.  “She is a lovely young lady, you should be proud.”

“Mar’trinka, this is Neelix, Head chef, moral office and unofficial ambassador.”

“Nice to meet you Mr. Neelix---and yes I am very proud of her.”

“Good, good—now you two go have a seat—I’ll get you some dinner.”  He rushed off to the kitchen without waiting for an answer.

“We better do as we’re told.”  He guided her to the table and introduced her to Harry.

         By the time Neelix served dinner, Harry and Bre’tara were off to the holodeck to catch up with Tom and B’Elanna.  Over dinner, Mar’trinka told him about her work with the children, which she began over thirty years ago as a young medical student, they talked of his home world, life in space, everything but the problem at hand.  It wasn’t until they returned to the VIP Suite that they talked about the Captain.

          Mar’trinka and the doctor had been over all the same ground the other researches covered.  She had thoroughly reviewed all the differences in Gavetten and human physiology and applied her own theories to the statistics.  Now she needed to find the unique factor that differentiated the Captain from the other humans who visited the planet.

“I think tomorrow we start to look at the Captain as an individual ….” She hesitated.  “Chakotay, I don’t mean to pry  ----but the doctor informs me that you have a ---unique relationship with the Captain.”

“Yes.”  He laughed.  “Unique is a good word for it. Mar’trinka anything I can do or say to help ---I will.  Anything you need to know to help her”

“You have experienced no symptoms?”

“No—I have to tell you Mar’trinka—we may not have the relationship you think.  Kathryn and I do not have a physical relationship.”

“I see, well the doctor…”  This was clearly not answer she expected.  “He told me how you took care of her—that you had more than a friendship..”

“And we do—much more, but it has been difficult—you see although our federation doesn’t forbid such a relationship in our positions ---it’s not usually an acceptable situation.   On the other hand our current circumstances are highly unusual.  It has taken Kathryn, years to come to this point---where she can openly admit to the feeling we have for each other.

“You must be a very patient man.”

“Most of the time---and Kathryn is worth waiting for.”

“And a very lucky lady.”  She smiled.  “Now tell me---what is it that makes her different –what physical trait separates the Captain from the other humans on the crew.”

“I don’t’ think there is anything---I mean, well-- she is older than the rest of the humans….”

“Yes, I have noted that, but the age difference is not great enough.  She is young enough to be included in the main grouping of females of child-bearing age.  Has she had any injuries or illnesses that might separate her—anything peculiar to her?”

“No permanent injuries, she was assimilated by the borg, along with B’Elanna and Tuvok –she was the only human  –Seven of nine is human and a former borg, but she did not go to the surface.”

“My understanding of nanoprobes would mean stronger resistance, but it is something to look into.”  She smiled, resting her hand on his arm.  “Chakotay, I will find a treatment.  Now, tell me about the Captain---no- tell me about your Kathryn.”  She smiled again at the softening of his expression.

“She is amazing –I think you would like each other—She is strong and determined.”  He laughed.  “When you said, “I will find a treatment.” you sounded like her.  She will bring this crew home, she said it, and I believe it.  What she sets her mind to, she does.  The only time I ever believed otherwise was when …..Mar’trinka…”  He look up at her the smile serious now.

“What?  When did you not believe her?”

“New Earth---we were infected with a virus.  Just Kathryn and I and the doctor couldn’t treat us.  The crew was forced to leave us behind on a planet –we called it New Earth—it was the only place we weren’t sick.”

“What happened?”

“The crew found a cure—the Vidians gave it to them and they came back for us.  Could that virus have changed us?”

“It might have, but this cure—what can you tell me about it?”

“Nothing—it worked.  But the doctor can explain.  Do you think it could have something to do with this?”

“I don’t know—but if it was designed for another species, it could have an effect.  We will diffidently check into to it, we’re going to check anything that would make her physiologically unique.”

         The door chime interrupted their conversation.  Chakotay call for it to open and they were joined by Bre’tara and Harry.

“Hi, did you enjoy your trip to the holodeck Bre’tara?”

“Oh yes, Commander it was quite fascinating ,  this is an amazing ship you have here.”  Bre’tara rushed in “Mar’trinka you should see this place.”

“Perhaps I shall, when my work is finished.”  Mar’trinka smiled to see her so happy.  “Thank you Ensign, for taking the time to show her.”

“Oh, yes thank you Harry –it was wonderful.”

“My pleasure.”  Harry smiled.  “Well, better be going, early shift.”

“Yes, me too.”  Chakotay agreed.  “I’ll let you ladies settle in, anything you need you can replicate. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Yes, thank you, Chakotay.”  Mar’trinka stood and took his hand.  “When you have opportunity in the morning, please stop by sickbay, I will want to run some tests on you---see the effects of this ‘cure’.”

“First thing.  Good night”

“Good night”

      First thing in the morning, Chakotay checked in on the bridge, reviewed their status, and leaving the ship in Tom’s hands, reported to sickbay.  Mar’trinka was already deeply engrossed in the lab, he checked on Kathryn before disturbing her.

“Mar’trinka.”  He stood in the entrance to the lab.

“Good morning.”  She turned to look in his direction, saw his eyes drift back to the stasis chamber.  “We will get started.”  She moved past him toward the diagnostic bed.  “Let me run some tests.”  He climbed onto the bed and she started the tests. “Just relax it won’t take long, and Chakotay.. ” She smiled as the dome closed over him.  “I will find an answer.”

“I know, thank you.”

      The tests took only about an hour, then he returned to the bridge to wait.  Waiting was difficult enough but being in orbit left little to do, which made the waiting seem longer.  B’Elanna called him to engineering, it was a thinly disguised attempt to distract him, which filled little of his time.  He handed off the bridge to Harry and tried his luck in the ready room, it was not easier there.  He left deck one, wandered through several departments, toyed with his lunch, checked in again with B’Elanna and finally reported back to sick bay.  Mar’trinka and the Doctor were just coming out of the lab.

“Ahh Commander, we were just going to contact you.”  The EMH greeted him.

“Have you found something?”

“I’m still not sure it will work, but yes, we have a treatment.”  Mar’trinka motioned him into the doctor’s office.  “Please.”

“So what are we waiting for?”  He sat next to her.

“I want you to understand this is experimental, we have no way of knowing it’s effectiveness.”  He nodded and she continued.  “Since no one else was infected and we are still unsure exactly how and why the Captain contracted this, we have no sure way to test this---we are not only unsure of a cure, we are not completely confident that we will not making the situation worse.  I have based this treatment on the information you gave me, the test we did earlier and several unusual characteristics your blood shares with the Captain’s, as well as various treatments I have successfully use on the children over the years.  I want you to know, we have contacted Dr. Plumeri’s research team and they do not concur with our treatment ”

“Alright.”  He glanced at the EMH.  “Doc. What do you think—do we have an alternative here? Do they have something to offer us? ”

“I’m afraid not Commander---this is the best we’ve got.”  He paused.  “Commander, we have tested this to the best of our ability—we ran several intensive holodeck simulations.  Even with the treatment, it may not be an easy recovery, she will need all her strength and the longer she remains in stasis the less she will have.”

“Mar’trinka, how do we proceed?”

“You’re sure, Chakotay?”

“I don’t see an alternative.  We can’t leave her like this, and the crew is becoming restless.”  He paused, glanced out the window at the stasis chamber and ran a hand through his hair.  “Yes—when do we start?”

“Alright, first I want to be prepared.  She will need round the clock care.  Bre’tara and I will of course be available to help, the doctor if his duties in sick bay can be covered and I presume you want to be included.”

“Yes, of course----being in orbit, I shouldn’t be needed on the bridge.  What does this care entail?”

“Because the care ---other than hyposprays at regular intervals—is largely superficial, keeping her comfortable and trying to keep the fever down—I would like to have her moved to her quarters.  I think she will be more comfortable there, as well as having a bit more privacy.”

“And what can we expect, will she have pain, be conscious?”

“I’m not sure how lucid she will be at first, it should improve with time.  We don’t expect any pain other headaches, which would be induced by both the stasis and the high fevers—which she may experience for a few more days.  I would prefer not give her any medication other than this treatment, in an effort to avoid any further complications.”

“When should we know if this is working?”

“I would expect some changes to be evident within 24 hours—although it could take up to a week before we are certain of a cure.”

“And if this doesn’t work?”

“With in 24 hours we should see change, if not we will put her back in stasis and continue our search.”  She moved next to him and placed her hand on his shoulder.  “Chakotay, we are not giving up.”

“Alright, let’s do it.”

“Doctor replicate the necessary medication.  Chakotay, if you will prepare her quarters, I will bring her out of stasis and when I am satisfied she is stable I will transport her to her quarters.  It should be less than an hour.”

            Chakotay briefed Tuvok on the Captain’s status.  They went over the few minor shift changes that would be necessary for Chakotay to remain with the Captain during her recovery and he officially handed command of Voyager over to Tuvok.

             Chakotay was back in the Captain’s quarters when Mar’trinka and Kathryn transported.  When they materialized, he was surprised how frail she was—she was never very big and she had lost weight in stasis –but this was more than he expected.  Her pale skin held a faint glow caused by the sonic shower, but even that didn’t improve her milk white pallor.  He assisted Mar’trinka in settling her in the bed.

“She is stable, as you can see we used the sonic shower, just to make her more comfortable.”

“Has she been awake?”

“Not yet, perhaps in a few hours.”  She watched him gently tuck her in, then turned to leave.  “I’ll be in the other room.  I have some things to prepare.”

          He stayed a few more minutes before joining Mar’trinka.  She had several padds arranged on the Captain’s desk and she was making entries to one of them.

“She still sleeping?”  She asked without looking up.

“Yeah.  Looks comfortable enough.”  He went to the replicator.  “I’m having tea, want some?”

“Thank you, I think I will.”  She brought the padd she was working on to the couch.  “This is the medication schedule—she will get a hypospray every four hours for the first twenty four hours and every six after that.  Her next is due in two hours.”  She accepted the tea.  “I think you should get some rest.”

“I want to be here if she wakes.”

“I know but I don’t think that will be for a while---I will call you.”  She set her cup down.  “Bre’tara is going to be here any minute, I plan on leaving her here for the first few hours, so we can both rest.  She can call us both instantly if there is any change.”

“Are you sure?”

“Of when she will wake—no, but I am sure Bre’tara can handle this.  She will call immediately if there any change.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to imply she couldn’t…”

“I understand, we are all uncertain of this, but I think in a few hours this peaceful state she is in will change and the best medicine we will have for her than will be you.  I think you should rest till then.”  The door chimed and she called to admit Bre’tara.  “Come Bre’tara, let me go over this with you.”

           Mar’trinka gave Bre’tara careful instruction.  Chakotay went in to see Kathryn, when he came out Mar’trinka was gone.

“Commander, Mar’trinka went to her quarters for a rest, she suggested you do the same.”

“Yes, she told me.”  He smiled at the girl who suddenly didn’t seem so young anymore---she appeared completely comfortable in this role and he felt better for it.

“Don’t worry, I will take good care of her.”  She smiled as she approached him.  “And I have a new –device, a comm. badge?--Harry showed me how to activate it, I can call you instantly.”  She showed him the shiny new badge pinned to her chest.

“OK, I’ll only be next door.”  He smiled and saw the young girl return in the blush, before he turned to go. “Bre’tara—thank you.”  She nodded shyly and he left.

    ~~~~~
“Bre’tara to Commander Chakotay”
           The soft voice finally cut through the fog of sleep and he reached for him comm. badge.
“Chakotay here.”  He sat up searching for the chronometer.  It was 0100 hours.
“Commander, the Captain is coming around and Mar’trinka asked me to page you.”
“Thank you Bre’tara, I’m on my way.  Chakotay out.”  He splashed water on his face and went directly to the Captain’s quarters.
             Chakotay entered his override and entered the dimly lit quarters.  No one was in the living area so he went to the bedroom.
“Mar’trinka?”  She was taking some reading, a pan of water and a wash cloth sat on the table next to the bed.
“Chakotay, good I will need your help.”  She struggled to remove the surgical gown.  He moved in to assist her.  “Her fever is too high, Bre’tara is running a cool bath.”
“How is she otherwise?”  He lifted her and carried her into the bathroom, gently lowering her into the water.
“No change, she is due for her third treatment in about an hour, but first we must control this fever.”  She wiped Kathryn’s face with the cloth.  “Bre’tara please change that bed and get her a fresh gown.”  She smiled at Chakotay.  “We will make her as comfortable as possible.”  She took a quick scan.  “It’s going down.”  As she said it Kathryn groaned.
“Kathryn –can you hear me?”  Chakotay was eager for any response.  She groaned again and her eyes fluttered.
“It’s dropping fast.”  Mar’trinka checked her scan.  Kathryn mumbled.  “One more minute and we will take her out.  I’ll get a towel.”
    He watched her as she tossed her head, moaning, her body still hot to the touch shivered in the cool water.  Her eyes opened but her stare was vacant not seeming to focus or recognize anything as if she didn’t even see him.
“Kathryn.”  She turned toward the sound of his voice without recognition.  “Kathryn.”
“Cold.”  It came out a hoarse whisper.
“Yes, I’m taking you out now.”  He lifted her and Mar’trinka wrapped one towel around her and dried her with a second.  He carried her to the other room, dressed her in the fresh gown and placed her in the bed.
“Her fever came down, that is a good sign.”  Mar’trinka moved toward the door.  “I’m going to send Bre’tara to rest.”
“Kathryn.”  He knelt beside the bed, she opened her eyes and smile weakly.  “It’s good to see you---how you feeling?”
“Tired.”  She was fighting to keep her eyes open.
“Sleep.”  She reached a hand toward him and he caught it in his.  “It’s OK sleep, I’ll be here.”
“Humm.”  She nodded her head and let her eyes close.
        He stayed by her side, holding her hand and watched her sleep.  She was warm but not hot like she had been before.    After a while Mar’trinka came in, he tried to move out of her way.
“No stay.”  She put her hand on his shoulder and making a quick scan.  “Still has a fever, but it’s not too high.  I’ll give her this hypospray and be out of your way.”
“Do you think it’s working?”
“Yes, the fever came down and her readings are better---it’s not over but she is responding.”  The hypospray  hissed against the Captain’s neck.  “I’ll be in the other room if you need me.”
“You might want to go back to your quarters---that couch isn’t very comfortable.”  He smiled.  “I know, I’ve slept on it.”
“I’ll be fine.”  She laughed and shook her head.  “You poor man.”  She patted his shoulder.  “Call if you need me.”
         He watched her for a while longer, before resting his head on the bed and drifting off to sleep.  He was still holding her hand and woke when it was suddenly jerked away.  Her head tossed from side to side, her body covered with a light sheen of sweat, she moaned then rolled toward him trying to sit up.
“Kathryn.”  She wasn’t hot to the touch, but she was sweating and then the retching started.  Mar’trinka.”  He yelled, holding Kathryn while her body retched trying to expel something that wasn’t there.  “Mar’trinka”
“I’m here.”  She came forward holding the tricorder.  “It’s a reaction to the medication.”
“Can you stop it?”  He held tight to the sweaty heaving body.
“Yes, but it would neutralize the effects of the medication as well.”  She adjusted the settings and took more scans.  “It isn’t dangerous, just uncomfortable.”
“There must be something.”
“Not without endangering her treatment.”  She moved in front of them.  “Kathryn, Kathryn.  Can you understand me?”
“Ye—yess.”  Kathryn managed between retching and gasping for air.
“I can neutralize this and put you back in stasis or we can continue as long as there is no real danger and hope the symptoms subside.  Do you understand?”  Kathryn nodded, gripping Chakotay’s hand.  “Do you want to continue?”  She nodded again and Mar’trinka looked at Chakotay.
“What can we do?”  She stopped retching, but she was still shaking as he laid her back against the pillow.
“Just make her as comfortable as possible.”  She pulled the blankets around her.  “I’ll get a fresh cloth to wipe her face.”
          After a while, the shaking subsided and Kathryn fell back to sleep.  The tap on his shoulder brought him back to the present.  Mar’trinka motioned him to follow into the other room.
“I’m sorry.”  She sat on the couch, beckoning him to sit also.  “I know it’s hard to sit by and let her suffer, but it is the only way.”
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“I think it will—and if we stop now we may never find a cure.”
“But what if it doesn’t work?”  He jumped up and began to pace.  “What if she does all this and it doesn’t work?”
“Chakotay I think…”
“I know what you think---thinking isn’t good enough-- damn it!”  His voice was deep and harsh he stopped pacing and glared at her.  “I want to know…”  The shocked expression on her face brought him back.  “I’m sorry.”  He ran a hand through his hair and walked to the view port.
“Chakotay.”  She gave him a few minutes then came around the couch.  “I truly believe this will work — but if it doesn’t we will know very soon.  I am monitoring her very closely, and if this doesn’t work we will have time to put her back in stasis and try again.”  Her voice was quiet and she remained a short distance away from him.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”  He turned and smiled at her.  “I appreciate everything you’ve done.---- but  what if it isn’t enough?”
“It will be and it’s alright to yell—I’m strong.”  She laughed.  “I can take it.”
“You sound like her.”
“Thank you.  That’s high praise around here.”  She wandered back toward the couch.  “I think we should eat something, before she wakes up.”
“Alright.”  He replicated them some dinner and joined her on the couch again.  “Will it get worse?”
“I think so.  These next three treatments may be difficult, given her reaction to the last one.”
“So what can I do?”
“Hold her.”  She laughed at his surprise.  “Truly, it is a multi-purpose treatment.  It will prevent her from falling or hurting her self and it will make her feel she secure,-- love is a powerful medicine, it can work miracles no drugs can accomplish.   And it will help you to deal with it too---to know you are helping her.”  She stood up and recycled her dishes.  “Now you finish eating and I will check on her.”
        He finished up and recycled the dishes, before joining her in Kathryn’s room.  The light was very dim and he had to wait for his eyes to adjust.  Mar’trinka was studying the tricorder readings, she looked up with concern when he came in.
“Her fever is back—though not as high, we will watch it.  Some fever is good it is a natural defense.
“How is she other wise?”
“She is improved—but--.”  She walked around the bed and placed her hand on his arm.  “The level of toxin in her blood is greatly increased.  The next several treatments could cause sever reactions, we will need to monitor it closely.”
“The operation was a success but the patient died.”
“What?”
“It’s an old earth joke---a bad one.  It means we might cure her, but the treatment could kill her.”
“No, I won’t let it get that far----I can neutralize the toxin almost instantly, but I would also negate the effects of the treatment.”
        The reaction to the next treatment was both immediate and violent.  Her body shook, spasms growing so violent, it was difficult for Chakotay to keep her from hurting herself.  The retching went on and on and ever time she quieted; she would start again.  She only rested for about an hour before the next treatment was due and then it started all over
again.  By the time she quieted again, they both fell into an exhausted sleep, his arms securely wrapped around her.
    It was thirteen hundred hours when he woke to the sound of voices in the room.  He focused on the sound trying to clear his head.  Mar’trinka was speaking to Bre’tara, they sounded happy, he slowly opened his eyes.
“Good morning—or is it afternoon?”  The quiet husky voice, startled him.
“Kath…”  He opened his eyes and she was smiling at him.
“Hello.”  She was half sitting, leaning back on the pillows.
“Welcome back.”  He touched her cheek, then drew her into a crushing hug.  “How are you?---Mar’trinka how is she?”
“She is wonderful---the virus is gone and the toxin almost dissipated.”
“Thank you.”  He raised his head, noting Bre’tara was there also.  “Both of you.”  He turned to look at Kathryn, she was still pale, her hair was a mess, she was sweaty and disheveled ---she looked great.  “God you’re beautiful--- don’t ever scare me like that again.”  He pulled her to him again.
“I’m sure I look wonderful.”  She laughed.
“Yes, you do and you sound wonderful.”  He nuzzled his nose in her neck.  “And you even smell wonderful.”
 “Oh god –you are hopeless.”  She laughed and pushed him back to see his face.  “And I love you.”  She took his face in her hands and kissed him.
“OK Bre’tara, I think that is our cue.”  She ushered Bre’tara out of the room.  “We will fix you something to eat---maybe you can help her to the sonic shower?”  Mar’trinka turned to leave.  “ I Promise-- she will only smell better.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”  He chuckled, turning back to Kathryn.  “She’s a lot like you—always giving orders.”
“Remind me to hurt you when I’m stronger.”  She pushed at his shoulder.
“She thinks it’s a compliment.”
“I’ll bet.”  She tried to swing her feet off the bed.  “Help me.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”  He ducked her swat, laughing.
         She ate very little after her shower, but the attempt was all that was necessary.  The doctor paid a visit and certified Mar’trinka's findings.  In spite of the fact that, the Captain spent the next week locked up in her quarters, most of it sleeping, the mood on Voyager was greatly improved.   Mar’trinka returned to the surface, but Bre’tara stayed aboard learning about Voyager’s different systems, enjoying the holodeck and the much improved disposition of the crew.
    The Captain’s first public appearance was to be at a thank you reception, for the Gavette, on the holodeck the night before they were scheduled to leave.  Honored guests would include the Ambassador, Mar’trinka, Bre’tara as well as members of the other research team.  She had not yet left her quarters but had been updated by reports and visits from various department heads on the current condition and running of the ship.  Not surprisingly, she discovered the ship in top shape and the crew, now that her recovery was complete, a happy and secure one.  The Ambassador was anxious to see her and so was invited to visit early in the day.
“Bridge to Janeway”
“Yes, Mr. Paris.”
“Ambassador Pietrzak is requesting permission to come aboard.”
“Very good Mr. Paris, have him escorted to my quarters.”
“Aye Captain—Paris out.”
“Would you like me to leave you alone?”  Chakotay moved off the couch.
“No.”  She reached for his hand.  “If it were possible, I would prefer you never leave me alone again.”
“I just thought you might want to see him alone.”
“Chakotay, I know you don’t care for Trent---so if you would rather not be here, it’s OK.  I just want you to know I would like you to stay, but I will understand it you don’t.”
“You’re sure of this?”
“Of course I am.  Chakotay you don’t still think…?”
“No Kathryn, I never really did---I just don’t want to intrude.”
“Chakotay.  You are not an intrusion in my life.”  She stood taking his other hand.  “You are the best part of it.  Funny how everyone seems to know that but you.”
“I guess I’m still afraid to let myself believe it.”
“Don’t be.  I love you.”  She stretched up to kiss him just as the chime sounded.
 “Sit, I’ll let him in.”
 “Chakotay—Are you staying?”
 “Now?”  He stopped and smiled at her.
 “For starters.”
 “OK---for starters.”  He triggered the door open.  “Ambassador, come in.”
 “Commander, good to see you again.”  He entered, locating Kathryn on the couch.  “Kathryn.”
 “Trent good to see you, come in and sit.”
 “You look well.”  He bent and kissed her cheek.  “I am glad Mar’trinka was able to help.”
 “Yes, she is a remarkable woman.”  She indicated the chair across from her.  “Please, Trent have a seat.  Chakotay ..”   She held out her hand and he took it sitting next to her.
         The gesture was not lost on Trent, and he was truly happy for them.  He thought he could have something special with this woman, an idea which had crossed his mind almost instantly upon meeting her, and he knew the Commander had picked up on it.  He was however, a practical man and along with his original impression came the certain knowledge that, for him, she was unattainable, she would never leave her ship and her crew.  It didn’t take long, only as long as it took her to introduce her first officer, for him to realize that, as dedicated as she was to her ship, as attached as she was to her crew, the one obstacle no one would ever over come, in pursuit of her, was this man.  She  had never said anything directly, she didn’t need to –just to observe her in his presence was enough.
        Their visit was short but pleasant, even Chakotay relaxed after a while.  Trent would be returning in a few hours to the party and so he prepared to leave them.
“I’ll be going and let you rest before the party.”  He stood and took her hand.
“Thank you for coming to check on me.”
“I’m just happy you are OK, If there is anything---anything at all I can do to make this up to you..”
“Trent, you have nothing to make up—thank you, but I’m fine now.”
“Still, I would like to do something,”
“You already have..”
“Ambassador there is something.”  He spoke to the ambassador but looked at Kathryn.  She was uncertain of what he was going to say but nodded for him to continue.
“Commander what is it?”
“Bre’tara—the young woman who came here with Mar’trinka.”
“Yes, she is a fine young woman.”  He looked puzzled.  “Is something wrong—I know she stayed aboard—does she wish to go with you?”
“No---although to be honest, we would be very lucky to have her.  She very intelligent and learns quickly.  She would be an asset to our crew, but her heart is in another line of work and that is where I think you might be able to help”
“What is it you think I might be able to do?”
“She works with the children, with Mar’trinka and truly loves the work.  What she really wants is to carry it on—to be a doctor.”
“I see.”
“Mar’trinka told me it would be nearly impossible for the home to pay for such extensive education.  I thought perhaps you could find a way—a scholarship, an apprentice program—something that might help.”
“Chakotay what a wonderful idea.”  She turned to Trent.  “Do you think it may be possible---I think she would be an excellent doctor.”
“As Mar’trinka said, this education is very costly on our world.”  He looked at both of them and nodded.  “If you believe she is capable and obviously you both do, then I will see what I can do.  I will have a better answer for you tonight.
“Thank You, Trent.”
“Ambassador, I would be very grateful.”  Chakotay extended his hand and the Ambassador shook it.
“One condition, Commander.---please call me Trent.”
“Simply enough, if you will return the favor.”
“Good, Kathryn, Chakotay I will see you in a few hours.”  He stopped just outside the door.  “Kathryn rest before the party.”
“I will.”
“And I show you to the transporter room.”  Chakotay stepped out, but looked back.  “Be right back.”
        The party was a success and Trent promised a full scholarship for Bre’tara’s education, which stunned both Bre’tara and Mar’trinka and set the party into full swing.  There was music and dancing and food of all types, the crew was celebrating the return of their Captain with a vengeance.  The Captain however, grew tired quickly.  Trent noticed and quietly urged his people to prepare to depart.  Most of the good-byes were short, except for Mar’trinka, Bre’tara and the Ambassador, who all lingered longer than the others.  Finally they were gone and Chakotay took the Captain home.
“Come in.”  She keyed in her code.  “Please.”
“For a minute—you need to rest.”  He chuckled.  “Especially if you are going to be on the bridge tomorrow when we break orbit.”
“I’m not due back on duty for three days.”  She smiled and tilted her head.  “What makes you think I will be on the bridge in the morning?”
“Because I know you.”  He bent and kissed her.  “Now you need some rest.”  He turned her toward the bedroom.
“Only if you stay with me.”
“Kathryn neither of us can sleep on that couch anymore---go on get some rest.”
“I know—please stay.”  The touch of uncertainty in her voice, as she turned to him, wasn’t missed.
“Well, if that’s what it takes to make you rest---I think I could make the sacrifice.”  He turned her back toward the other room.  “Let’s go—you need to sleep.”
“Yes, sir.” She preceded him into her room, turned down the bed and retrieved a fresh nightgown from the dresser.   She turned back to face him.  “Which side would you like?”
“Either, do you have a preference?”  He smiled, even sleeping had to be conducted properly.
“Actually, yes.  I tend to sleep on my right side, so I’ll take this side.”
“OK.”  He circled to the other side of the bed, sitting to remove his boots.  “Should I be wearing starfleet issue pajamas?”  He glanced over his shoulder at her, as she slipped the nightgown—a very non- regulation nightgown—over her head.  “Cause I don’t own any, but if it’s required I could replicate them.”
“What ever you are comfortable with.”  She slipped into the bed, lying on her right side, facing him.  “What do you usually wear?”
“Actually--- nothing.”  His boots and shirt removed, he stood and faced her as he unfastened his pants.
“However, you are most comfortable.”  She smiled and snuggled under the covers, her eyes glued to his.
“OK” He watched her eyes flicker, as she lost her fight to maintain eye contact and instead followed his hands as they removed his trousers and then his boxes.  Her eyes widened slightly and she blushed when he chuckled.  “Approve?”  He climbed in beside her.
“Interesting.”  She looked up at him and laughed, then slipped into his arms and buried her face in his chest.
“It’s a start.”  He rubbed her back.  “Now sleep.”
“Yeah—that’s what I was thinking of doing.”  Her warm breath against his chest was followed but tiny moist kisses.
“Behave yourself and sleep, or I’ll go home.”
“Now there’s a switch, no one would believe.”
“You better.”  He caught her hand as it slipped down his side.  “You need your rest.”
“OK, I’ll rest, but you better too.”
“Night, Kathryn.”  He chuckled and kissed her head.
“Night, Chakotay.”
       She was tired and drifted off to sleep quickly, but Kathryn Janeway never slept very much and in the last weeks she had done little else.  At 0400 hours her eyes opened, she was wide awake.  She spent several minutes, enjoying the warmth and security of lying in his arms, remembering how safe she felt here even at her worst moments.  She slowly moved back, raising up to watch him as he slept.  He was so calm, her angry warrior was at peace in her bed and she wanted to keep him there.  She traced the lines of his tattoo with her finger, then drew her finger along his jaw line and down his neck.  He shifted when she bent and flicked her tongue into the hollow of his neck.  Her fingers lightly traced the muscles in his shoulders and arms coming back to caress the golden skin of his exposed chest.  His nipples stiffened at her touch and she couldn’t resist reaching her tongue out to taste them.  She blew cool air at the spots of moisture and watched the dark dimpled surface tighten.  Her hands continued to explore down his stomach, as her lips closed around the hardened nipple.
“Kathryn.”  His sleepy voice reached her ears, but she didn’t stop.  “You are supposed to be sleeping.”
“I woke up.”  Her fingers wrapped around his penis, feeling it stiffen and grow at her touch.  “Humm seems you did too.”  She was kissing a path down his stomach.
“Woman.”  Effortlessly he lifted her by her arms and placed her back against the pillow.  “What am I gonna do with you?”
“Want suggestions?”  She giggled, he laughed-- Kathryn never giggled.
“Oh I have plenty of my own ideas.”  He lowered his lips to hers, kissing her softly, one hand tracing the outline of her breast through the nightgown.  She arched against his hand, her own caressing all of him within her reach.  “I love you.”  He breathed against her neck, as his mouth worked it’s way down to her chest, his hand reaching beneath the hem of the gown slowly raising it, fingers lightly running over the tender warmth of her inner thigh. He let his hand slide up to the junction between her thighs, soft moans escaped her, as his hands brushed over her curls and his mouth devoured her breast.  Instinctively she spread her thighs, his probing fingers found her ready and very wet, and she groaned as strong fingers gently stroked her most tender flesh.  He entered her slowly, slipping one finger deeply into her satin wetness, then two.
“Yess oohh yes.”  She gasped thrusting her hips, arching against his hand, her body bucking at his touch.
He rose up to kiss her, their tongues working in rhythm with his fingers, she was moaning into his mouth.  Her body arching, swaying, writhing beneath his touch.  She tossed back her head and he move to watch her, his thumb reaching her throbbing nerve center, his fingers inside her thrusting, massaging.  Her cries disintegrated into incoherent moans and sobs, her body thrashed and stiffened before convulsing around his hand.
       He kissed her face, stroking her body, cradling her as she regained control. Calmer but still needing him, she turned toward him, pressing herself to him, kissing, caressing, stroking him. Her kisses went from his mouth, along his jaw, his neck, seeking the dark erect knot of his nipples, blazing a path down his stomach as she moved herself down the bed.  Her hands caressed the warm flesh on his inner thighs. Her tongue snaked out to taste him, lapping at the escaping fluid causing a shudder to pass through him.
“Kathryn.”  He hissed, his hands tangled in her hair, as the velvet moisture of her warm mouth closed around him. "Godd."  He moaned, sucking in his breath, as her lips and tongue caressed him.  He fought for control, as he moved against her at an increasing pace.  Her teeth grazed him, tongue flicked and explored him as she suckled him ---working with each thrust to take him deeper.  His fingers twisted her hair, his grasp tightening, his breath coming in  short gasps.  “Kath—please.”  He tugged at her shoulders until she reluctantly released him and moved up next to him.
He rolled her back holding her hands away from him, capturing her mouth is an deep lingering kiss.  “I want to taste you.”
         Positioning himself between her thighs, his fingers gently spread her lips and his tongue reached out to taste her, lapping at the abundant pungent juices, his tongue swirling, lapping, pressing her aching bundle of nerves, until once  again, she writhed beneath his delicious assault.
"Ahhh ---godd--Cha—Ahh—please."  Her hand groping at his head, grasping his hair tugging.  “Please, now Chakotay.”
           He rose above her, entering slowly--just a little then withdrew--and again.  Oh god he needed her--but suddenly as he looked down at this delicate woman he was afraid—he tried to hold back, tried to be gentle, move slowly. –She would have none of it.  Wrapping her legs around him, she bucked up against him trying to force him deeper, she clutched at him and her frantic need was pushing him beyond reason.  He moved into her forcefully, using all his will to be still when she cried out.  He waited till she moved against him, then began slow deep measured strokes.  She thrust up to meet him, quickening the pace, grinding her body against his with every thrust.  She thrashed beneath him, her breath reduced to short sharp gasps, her body gripping him as she convulsed around him.  He grabbed her hips,  thrusting now in short quick desperate strokes, stiffening, he cried out his own release as he spasmed deep within her.   Heaving, sweating, gasping bodies, joined –collapsed together.
       They rolled to their sides, still wrapped together in a most intimate embrace, hearts pounding in rhythm.
“Interesting enough?”  He stoked her back, his warm breath blowing through her hair.
“Mmmm –for starters.”  She snuggled in close and felt the rumble in his chest when he chuckled.
“CAPTAIN THE TIME IS 0500 HOURS.  CAPTAIN THE TIME IS 0500.”
“Computer reset 24 hours.”  She snuck a peek at him.
“When did you set that?  You are supposed to be off duty.”  He smirked down at her.
“Ahhh—weeelll.”  She gave him the crooked smile.
“Never mind.”  He patted her bottom.  “Go shower—We knew you wouldn't follow orders anyway.”  He laughed as she rolled away and headed for the bathroom.
         After his shower, he came into the bedroom to find her sitting on the bed shaking her head.  She was dressed in her uniform pants and turtleneck and very distressed.
“Look at this.”  She stood up and grabbed the sides of her pants to show him how big they were.  “I can’t go out there in this.”
“Humm.”  He knew she lost weight, but hadn’t realized how much until her own uniform hung off her.  She was right this would scare the crew.  “OK hold this.”  He handed her a comm. badge.”
“What…?”
“Computer site to site—transport Captain Janeway to her living quarters.”  He laughed out loud at her expression, as she shimmered away only to materialize in the living area.
“What the hell is this?”  She yelled coming back into the room.
“Wait.”  He left her standing there and went to the other room, returning a few minutes later with a new uniform for her.  “Here this should fit.”
“Oh—very cleaver, Commander.”  She chuckled.  Transporting her had given the pattern buffers her new measurements and allowed him to replicate a uniform that fit.
         The new uniform worked wonders, you would have to look very closely or know her very, very, well to know how very thin she was after her illness.  When the doors to the lift open on the bridge, Captain Janeway stepped out to resume command of her ship; A very welcome sight.  She nodded to her smiling crew as she took her place beside the, Commander.
“Mr. Paris.  Take us out of orbit.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”  Tom swung his grinning face back to the conn.  “Breaking orbit, Captain.”
“Set a course for the Alpha quadrant, warp four.”
“Aye Captain.”
“Take us home Mr. Paris.”  She glanced to her left and returned the adoring smile she found there.
The End.
